PayPal Support = Retarded 3rd Graders

My PayPal account got locked down in late 2012.

I finally got around to needing to sell something on Ebay and am attempting to get the account restored.

Dealing with PayPal support is like dealing with a bunch of retarded 3rd graders.

First, I needed to provide Identification and Proof of Address (Energy Bill).

No problem, scan those in and submit them.

They confirm that those have been completed and then want me to explain why I accessed my account from Iran....I never accessed my account from Iran obviously.

So I write them a letter explaining that I have never accessed my account from Iran and that nobody from Iran should be accessing my account.

    Now the hilarity begins.

Of course they denied this response, and followed up asking for a response as to why I accessed my PayPal from Iran.

I laugh and decide to call PayPal support. On the phone I am told that Foreign Disputes can only be handled by email.

When I explain I already did that and they denied my response, they basically said, to fucking bad try again.

I hang up and send another email to PayPal support.

They of course deny my explanation again.

I call support again and ask to speak to a Supervisor, of course they won't let me speak to one.

Repeated this process a couple more times and I finally gave up.

Now I am stuck without a PayPal account and appears it may be totally lost forever.

I am thinking I may need the assistance of a Jewish Radio Attorney.

I also know somebody that writes major tech articles for the AP and am thinking I might publicly shame them into getting my account back.

Anyone got any ideas on how I might resolve this?

You were in Iran to troubleshoot stuxnet virus at nuclear facility and needed an HDMI cable cause the fucking Motel 6 in Tehran doesnt offer any pay per view porn.

Why do they care where you log in?

You tell em Silk Road never asked these sorts of questions.

I might try reaching out to eBay. Paypal killing business.

They gave me some Federal Regulation that I may potentially be violating.

So I am assuming it is against the law to do business in Iran.

In a funny turn of events I got my account reinstated this morning.

I posted my frustrations on Facebook and one of my friends sent me a message with a Manager's phone number (who is state side in Nebraska of all fucking places).

30 seconds into hearing my conversation, he laughs, asks for my email....resolved.

Log in and everything is back to normal.

I can't even see the case anymore in the Resolution Center....I think he just deleted the whole fucking thing out.

I can now go back to selling my Cubs tickets for the upcoming year....hooray!

So are they doing anything about you being hacked from Iran by having someone access your account from there?

They made me change my password back in 2012 when my account got locked down.

Assuming that is the extent they are going to, to fix the problem.

The wording on it was weird too, someone "attempted" to gain access to your account from Iran. So it is possible that they never actually succeeded.

abrown, it's amazing reading your post because it's like I wrote it back in 2001. I had an incredibly similar experience (and this was BEFORE eBay owned them) -- right down to the weird Nebraska affiliaton.

Back in 2001, Paypal DID allow their site to be used to deposit to online poker. I was using them to deposit to True Poker, but the first time I tried, something failed. Somehow True Poker's system couldn't automatically recognize my deposit like it could for everyone else. Finally the owner just told me to try with another Paypal account and see if it works. That's what I did, and it worked, but this was a very...

Paypal's security bot caught the fact that I had two accounts and suspended both of them. One account had no money in it, while the other had $135. The automated e-mail said that I violated Paypal rules by having two accounts, and that both accounts were frozen. It sent me a questionnaire to complete to get it unfrozen. At first this seemed simple, but I should have known that a hurricane of fail was waiting for me around the corner.

I filled out the questionnaire and explained, in detail, exacty what happened. I told the complete truth. I asked them to just close the first account and leave the second one open.

A long time passwed with no response, aside from the initial automated response telling me to wait "24-48 hours" to get an answer.

Finally I got an e-mail from them three weeks later. It demanded a utility bill to prove my identity, along with an ID with an address matching my utility bill.

I could not provide these things. My ID had my PO Box on it, and my utility bills were not in my name. I wrote back explaining this, and again another three weeks passed. I finally got another form letter back, telling me that without a utility bill and ID, my account could not be unfrozen. What?!

I then set out to find a way to call Paypal. Unlike the Paypal of today, there was no phone number publicized for them in 2001. You had to dig and dig and dig to find it. Finally I found a phone number (posted on some forum) with a Nebrask area code, which I thought was weird.

I called that number and indeed reached Paypal, but the fail was just beginning.

I got a complete moron on the other end of the phone. The conversation went like this:

Me: Hi, it says I need a utility bill and ID with matching addresses to unfreeze my account, bu I can't provide those things because the utility bill isn't in my name, and my ID has a PO Box that doesn't match it anyway.

Rep: Sir, I'm sorry, but that is our policy. You need a utility bill and ID with matching addresses to unfreeze your account.

Me: Did you hear what I just explained? The utilities are in my roommate's name. And my ID has a PO Box on it. There is no way to give you the info you're requesting. Can you give me some other way to prove my identity?

Rep: Sir, we are giving you a way to prove your identity, but you are refusing to do so.

Me: I AM NOT REFUSING! There is no way to do it! The addresses do not match and cannot match!

Rep: Sir, if you do not have the proper identity documents, please take care of that matter and call back when you do have them.

    Me:

Keep in mind that this was NOT a foreign outsourced rep, but rather an American answering the phone.

I continued to argue until she literally hung up on me. I called back, and got someone just as bad, even when I asked for a supervisor. After several tries, I gave up. There was simply no way to reopen my account -- either over the phone or by e-mail. I got stuck in this endless loop.

Since I had deposited $100 of the $135 by credit card, I charged it back. Paypal stupidly didn't respond in time, and I won by default. When they discovered what I did, they deleted my accounts.

Bottom line: I empathize what you went through big time, and it looks like 12 years later, they haven't changed a bit, even with an ownership change.

And WTF is with this Nebraska connection?

Anyone who makes analogies about Bitcoins/crypto-currencies and tulips etc simply need the above stories to understand one of the many reasons people will be migrating away from fiat currencies when dealing with money issues online. Centralized things like Paypal just let you be fucked around and over.

Even though EBay owns Paypal their support still remains in Nebraska to this day. What many dont know is Paypal started out as an online bank/financial services entity known as X.com back in 1999. Paypal was formed when X.com and Confinity from Palo Alto CA merged in 2000. X.COM was an online financial services company which offered email direct pay (what paypal offers today). I actually was a user on X.COM because it was the first place Id ever seen to offer basically money market checking for those on smaller deposits (the money you deposited actually was a money market acct tracking the SPDR aka S&P 500).

The weird thing was the issue with Billpoint. EBay bought Billpoint back in 99 and it was billed as ebay payments (but only for auctions). The irony was around 4k in auctions were offering Billpoint while Paypal remained a viable option with users adding it as a payment option for over 200k listings.. By April 2000 Paypal was avging over 1M auctions a month on Ebay.. Paypal went public shortly there after and was bought by Ebay in 2002.

My paypal acct got hacked twice. I made a new account in a family members name with a different email but same bank acct and have had no issues.
