    Celebrity Republicans

Some of these are a stretch, but still an interesting read.

There were some omissions, too, such as singer Amy Grant, producer Mark Cherry, and Oingo Boingo frontman Danny Elfman.

Rapper Eazy E was also leaning more and more conservative before he died.

Other than a plethora of Hollywood Moonbats, what person of sound mind would even consider associating with the Democratic Party?

Democrats have done more to destroy our great nation than Fidel Castro ever cooked up during his wildest wet dream.

He claims to be more libertarian, but he was definitely leaning right when he wrote some of his songs in the early '80s.

He wrote this song "Capitalism" in 1981, and it might as well have been about the recent Occupy Wall Street movement:

    There's nothing wrong with Capitalism
There's nothing wrong with free enterprise
Don't try to make me feel guilty
I'm so tired of hearing you cry

There's nothing wrong with making some profit
If you ask me I'll say it's just fine
There's nothing wrong with wanting to live nice
I'm so tired of hearing you whine
    About the revolution
    Bringin' down the rich
When was the last time you dug a ditch, baby!

    If it ain't one thing
    Then it's the other
Any cause that crosses your path
Your heart bleeds for anyone's brother
I've got to tell you you're a pain in the ass

You criticize with plenty of vigor
You rationalize everything that you do
With catchy phrases and heavy quotations
And everybody is crazy but you

You're just a middle class, socialist brat
From a suburban family and you never really had to work
And you tell me that we've got to get back
To the struggling masses (whoever they are)
You talk, talk, talk about suffering and pain
Your mouth is bigger than your entire brain
What the hell do you know about suffering and pain . . .
And from the same album came "Only a Lad", which mocked liberals who made excuses for violent criminals:

Johnny was bad, even as a child everybody could tell
Everyone said if you don't get straight
    You'll surely go to hell

    But Johnny didn't care
He was an outlaw by the time that he was
    Ten years old
He didn't wanna do what he was told
    Just a prankster, juvenile gangster

    His teachers didn't understand
They kicked him out of school
    At a tender early age
Just because he didn't want to learn things
    (Had other interests)
    He liked to burn things

    The lady down the block
She had a radio that Johnny wanted oh so bad
So he took it the first chance he had
Then he shot her in the leg
And this is what she said
    Only a lad
    You really can't blame him
    Only a lad
    Society made him
    Only a lad
    He's our responsibility
    Only a lad
    He really couldn't help it
    Only a lad
He didn't want to do it
    Only a lad
    He's underprivileged and abused
    Perhaps a little bit confused

His parents gave up they couldn't influence his attitude
    Nobody could help
The little man had no gratitude

And when he stole the car
    Nobody dreamed that he would
Try to take it so far
He didn't mean to hit the poor man
Who had to go and die
    It made the judge cry

    Only a lad
    He really couldn't help it
    Only a lad
He didn't want to do it
    Only a lad
    He's underprivileged and abused
    Perhaps a little bit confused

It's not his fault that he can't believe
It's not his fault that he can't behave
    Society made him go astray
Perhaps if we're nice he'll go away
    Perhaps he'll go away
    He'll go away

    (Repeat chorus)

Hey there Johnny you really don't fool me
    You get away with murder
    And you think it's funny
You don't give a damn if we live or if we die
    Hey there Johnny boy
    I hope you fry!

After reading those lyrics. I understand why Danny Elfman made his bones as a composer and not a song writer.

He should stick to composing, although those rhymes probably originated during his Oingo Boingo days.

BTW Todd, do you read your PMs?

I understand that since Micon hung you out to dry you fell the need to pick up the slack in the hip-hop discussion but just please do a little research on Eazy E's situation. The conspiracy theories on him are quite interesting too.

I don't know if Eazy-E was really Republican or not but the reason he is brought up is actually really funny. The way that charities worked was if you gave so much in donations you would get mailers from politicians for invites to charity balls and fundraisers and shit. So Mr. Eric Wright donated tons of money to different charities and his name gets put on the list for an invite to a White House Dinner event where it was $25,000 a plate. They had no idea that Eric Wright was in fact Eazy-E so of course he shows up at this dinner with then President Bush and basically started a frenzy of "how the fuck is one of the most notorious gangster rappers in the world at a dinner at the White House?" When asked about it later he said he figured he would pay the $25,000 and get about a million in free publicity. Eazy E motherfucker cold knockin the boots!

Because the modern Republican is a far different beast than the party of Lincoln or even the party that was at the forefront of Women's Suffrage and the Civil Rights Movement. MLK lived in the south where racist Dixiecrats were as anti-civil rights as the modern Republican are anti-gay marriage.

It's so hard to pigeon-hole people politically unless they are at the extremes, and typically fiscal Republicans who do not want to be identified with social conservatives throw out the Libertarian moniker, but what they really are is simply old-school Republicans. There are many issues that I agree with Democrats on and many issues I agree with Republicans on:

    1. I think the safety net is TOO wide
    2. I think we should allow people more control over their SS funds
    3. I think getting a concealed carry permit should be as easy as getting a driver's license
    4. I'm PRO Universal Health Care
    5. I'm for the government not recognizing ANY marriages, and only recognizing Civil Unions (problem solved religious fanatics)
    6. I'm pro-private sector unions and anti-public sector unions
    7. I think "going back to the gold standard" is a farce, since the gold standard has failed just as often as fiat currency

I have no political home, and rarely find a candidate I agree with on more than 50% issues, so I tend to vote for the person who I think is the most honest and forthright
I write things about poker at my Poker Blog and elsewhere on the Internets

Yeah I grew up on The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo; "Capitalism" is a sarcastic dig at Orange County honkey types.

    Bringin' down the rich

    I mean come on.

Oingo Boingo was a LA punk band. They had no conservative leanings. They were big into LSD and stirring the pot and generally being fantastic.

The libertarian angle makes a lot of sense to me but Id really love to hear Danny Elfman explain his reasons behind registering republican, its such an incongruous gesture on his part, I have to wonder if there is some subversive / left-wing activist logic to it.

I dont understand why people rip on Arnold... Im not that up to speed on Cali politics anymore but he seemed to be doing a great job of implementing fiscal conservatism and ecological conservation when I lived there.

Huh?...What don't you understand?...Arnold promised to set this state right and stand up to the unions...Instead he caved in to their demands for re-election...

Between 2015 to 2030 California is committed tp $900 billion in retirement benifits for state employees...Or $60 billion a year...Only of which half is funded by Wall Street...So with a state guarantee where is this $$$ going to come from with many taxpayers already in flight to other states?...And only illegal imagrants entering...It doesn't pencil out my friend...

California teachers union was formed in the early 70s...At that time California was #1 in student test scores in the nation...Now 40 years later with the teachers union in totla control of state policy we rank 48th in test scores

When was the last time you dug a ditch, baby!

Reading the lyrics of "Capitalism" again, you might be correct about that song sarcastically making fun of those putting down left-winger types. If that's true, however, he accidentally happened upon some valid points, such as the fact that many fanatical left-wing protesters are from rich or upper-middle-class families, living off of Daddy's money.

I do have to wonder if "Capitalism" was really a dig against early '80s Orange County Republicans, though, because "Only a Lad" was clearly a song sarcastically making fun of the left's softness on violent crime. Obviously Elfman couldn't have been a fan of the '80s left if he wrote and produced songs like that.

I believe I've seen interviews with him before where he indicates he's a libertarian. If that's true, his "Capitalism" song might be more serious than sarcastic, as most libertarians are staunch believers in the free market, but are more left-leaning on social issues.

Arnold was a weird politician (all adultery with ugly housekeepers aside).

He came into office through a peculiar recall election, where then-incumbent Gray Davis arrogantly dismissed the possibility he could be recalled until it was too late. Davis wasn't as bad as many made him out to be, and he really didn't deserve to be recalled, but he made some pretty big mistakes and was out of touch with the wants and needs of California. His arrogance was also ultimately his undoing, as he dismissed the recall campaign as the ridiculous idea of a fringe politician (not Arnold, who came into the fray later).

Arnold was elected as a Republican and enjoyed a lot of Republican money and support, but he ultimately turned on his own party and beat to his own drum. There's nothing wrong with straying from party lines to do what you feel is right, but Arnold took it to an extreme to where he wasn't a Republican anymore. He was pretty much right in the middle politically (especially by the end), and I felt it was a bit dishonest for him to take Republican money (and electorate support) in order to get in office, and then later show his true colors. This was especially true in his second term. As has already been stated here, it seems that many of Arnold's actions were aimed at reelection and popularity, rather than principles, since a typical Republican won't score a lot of points with many in California.

He wasn't a terrible governor, but he disappointed me in a lot of ways. I haven't really liked any of California's governors since George Deukmejian left office in the early '90s. His successor, Republican Pete Wilson, liked taxes too much, even though his anti-crime efforts (Three Strikes, reinstatement of California's death penalty) should be applauded.

Yeah, California's death row is a disaster.

Many murderers sentenced to death have been sitting there for decades. It's a complete joke.

They need to take a lesson from Texas and Florida, both of which have been much more efficient at putting an end to those sentenced to death. It's terrible that some of these people are continuing to live off the state 20-30 years after being sentenced to die, especially in the cases of super-obvious guilt.

For example, who remembers "Night Stalker" Richard Ramirez? He murdered 13 people in 1985, was sentenced to death, and is still alive. There is zero doubt that he committed these crimes. Why is he still breathing?
