    7500 bitcoins buried underground

Well, almost. This guy threw out his laptop earlier this year that contained a digital wallet of 7500 bitcoins.

I can believe there are definitely stories like this....but it also leads to wondering about potential scams.

"He has also set up a Bitcoin wallet for donations aimed at recovering the hard drive"

Looks like he already has ~0.1 btc = $120 from this.

I'm calling BS. Because even if they were worth $1 each let alone $5 each he wouldn't have ever just "forgotten about them".

I'm not so sure. It seems like he thought he still had them. Either way there will be a break-in at the land fill

This was already posted in the other bitcoin thread.

Personally I think this guy is full of shit & is looking for attention.

This reminds me of another landfill related story:

Back in the late 80's the biggest Lotto 649 jackpot(approx 14M) at the time was won. After about a week nobody had come forward to claim it & some guy went to the media to claim that he accidently threw the winning ticket out & was in the landfill. There was a frenzy on the landfill that didn't even calm down after a lawyer came forward & released a statement that his clients were the winners & he had the ticket in his possession. It didn't stop until the lawyers clients actually came forward to claim the prize a few days later.

It turned out the guy who claimed he threw it away was just punking everyone.

Smells of BS. Even if true it serves him right for not keeping a back-up.

Surely a hard-drive that's been in landfill for 6 months in British weather would be irretrievably damaged anyway?

Drives are sealed pretty well. If the guy's story is true, then a few thousand dollars of professional data recovery should be able to get it.

technically, from what I read, the HD is likely up near the top of the landfill, around 4-6 feet from the top, due to the timeframe it was probably/allegedly dropped there.

He's telling fibs. No way you can mine 7500 Bitcoins on a laptop in one week.

"Howells stopped mining after a week because his girlfriend complained that the laptop was getting too noisy and hot while it ran the programs to solve the complex mathematical problems needed to create new Bitcoins."

Edit: Also he claims to have been using a Dell XPS N1710 which does have a dedicated GPU... problem with his story is nVidia GPU's are terrible at mining Bitcoins, at least ten times slower then a comparable ATI GPU.

the inference about it being noisy implies that he was using a usb based APIC farm.

not that i believe a word of this anyway.
