How to get codes to unlock a phone?

I have a non-smart phone I use sometimes and want to take it overseas to get a cheap prepaid SIM. I called the company who originally sold me my phone to unlock it the honest way but they told me they'd get back to me within a few days and they never did. I chased them down and they fed me some bullshit. So now I'm going to do it myself. Best way? Thanks.

Rent a phone at the airport of the country you're visiting. You, most of the time, will get international calls for free and it's usually cheap. There's no guarantee your phone will work properly in that country. I've taken cell phones to a lot of countries with mixed results. Renting a phone has always been optimal.

I know this phone will work in the country in question. I already have a SIM card for the country in question and wish to keep the same number.

Model and current carrier are what matters. If you have been a good client of whatever carrier you are with then call customer support and tell them why you want it unlocked. They can do it if they choose to. If they say no, call back and try a different agent. Be nice and you will get it done for nothing.

Off topic, but Motortola is dropping the Moto G in January for $175 already unlocked with no contract or carrier restrictions. Looks like a good phone for the money as it is basically the Moto X with a slightly slower processor.

i believe verizon allows you to get a loaner phone if you go overseas.
