I did not adjudicate anything. I offered to get involved, but I was told not to at the time, so I didn't.
However, it is my personal belief that badguy23 scammed a longtime member here, from the evidence I've been shown. And right when that happened was when badguy suddenly stopped posting on the forum, so it makes sense.
badguy has never presented himself as a fine, upstanding character. He's always been the "lovable delinquent" type of this community. However, one line he never had crossed, to my knowledge, was ripping off any members here. I know there was something stupid with Yebsite in the 2000s, but Yeb's hands weren't exactly clean in that whole thing either.
But this particular situation really bothers me, and badguy will need to address it if he wishes to stay here during his 2024 "comeback".
These type of situations are tough for me.
I always offer to get involved when two users are in a dispute, financial or otherwise. However, sometimes I am told by the apparent victim to stay out of it, for whatever reason. I always try to respect that.
It gets complicated if the accused could be an ongoing threat to the community, but in badguy's case, he had exited stage left by the time I heard about it, so there was nothing to be concerned about anymore from that standpoint.
As I said, if he is to return here, this needs to be honestly addressed by him. I will say that I was very disappointed to hear the story at the time, because I had thought badguy had more respect for this community than that. If this were just a "low moment" for him, and he wishes to make it right, he should come forward and do so.
