My condolences on having to be in that shithole for Devil's Night. I wholeheartedly suggest that you don't leave your hotel after dark and don't make eye contact with any black people. It sounds racist as hell but it's for your own good.
I went to Detroit a few years back stayed at the MGM there. The MGM is nice but it was actually funny how terrible everything looked from the window of my room. It was a complete wasteland of abandoned buildings and complete misery. It made bad areas of Vegas look decent. I wish I still had the pictures.
The staff told me I should not leave the hotel for any reason on foot after 9 pm. It was as if the MGM was a fortress and we were fortified against zombies.
I am pretty sure the MGM detroit makes the majority of their money off drug dealers. So many brothers with gold, diamonds betting sick amounts of money.
Exact opposite is true. Your advice is actually lethal. Here you affirm the person you are casually passing with what we refer to as 'the detroit nod'. No smiles, no hellos, just eye contact and a nod in the affirmative. It shows that you see that person and respect that they are there. Ignoring or dodging glances here can get you jumped.
By staying in Detroit for Devils Night he really means he'll be nestled up at the Detroit Marriot in Livonia.
I'd go with the Greektown Casino Hotel, at least then you can go out at night and walk around. At MotorCity or MGM you are on an island... surrounded by zombies. I mean if the guy is posting on a poker forum, it would stand to reason that he would twist his bosses nutsack to stay at a casino if he was making come to our little shithole. Especially Devil's Night. What timing.
It's funny because I don't think a lot of people outside of Detroit even know what the fuck Devils Night is or what it's about.
