New $100 bill coming out tomorrow -- making US money finally look like monopoly money

Always hated the look of most of the world's currency because it looks too colorful as if it's out of a Monopoly game.

Maybe it's just because I got used to the green look of US currency, but it just looks ridiculous to me to see money in other colors.

Well, the US has finally abandoned their green-and-white color scheme, and this is what the new $100 will look like:

Supposedly this is being done to make it more difficult to counterfeit.

We really need them to bring back $500 and $1000 bills, but that's not going to happen because of post-9/11 terrorism fears. Now the government wants more than ever to easily catch large amount of cash being physically moved, and larger bills make such money movement more difficult.

All middle and high limit poker players (at least ones who play live) know how brutal it is to carry around a ton of hundred dollar bills in order to be properly rolled in your games.

The worst was when they closed my Wynn box because I wasn't using it enough, and abruptly forced me to come down and empty it. I had $137,000 in there, and it was the middle of summer. I was terrified walking out in the parking lot with that kind of $. Yes, I could have gotten a security guard to walk me out, but that doesn't absolve the casino of responsibility and what if the dude tipped off his friends to rob me? Keep in mind that the Wynn had no clue how much I had in the box.

So I went down there with a jacket, stuffed the $137k in there and in my pants, looked around carefully (but not so much that I'd be noticed), sweated big time as I walked through the parking lot (probably should have valeted but didn't), and got into my car safely. If I got mugged then, the mugger would have hit a shocking prize.

Oddly enough, they had $1000 bills in the '70s, even though money was worth a lot more back then.

$100 in 1971 is worth more than $500 today. $100 in 1985 is worth about $200 today.

When are they going to start cranking out the million dollar notes with Obama's face on it?

On a more serious note as it were, reminds me of the euro and aussie money which is odd given American money is the greenback but as you said most likely to cut down on counterfeiting.

    Sick brag about the $137k.

Not a day goes by that I don't cry myself to sleep over this. Some days my arms are so soar from carrying around bricks of 100's

I think it looks great, but I've lived abroad and traveled a lot and am used to colorful money.

On a side note, aside from gamblers, does anyone ever carry cash? I'll pull out some money if I'm going to a concert or sporting event for parking and to buy concessions but otherwise never have more than $20 in my wallet, unless it's to/from bookie.

technically they do still have $1000 bills in circulation, but they dont offer them new at banks anymore.

If I was in that situation I'd feel OK taking $5000 chips with me.

Always thought it is dumb to have different denomination notes all the same colour and size as it must be easy to mistake one bill for a different value.

    I guess it's whatever you're used to.

Benny Binion collected 100 $10,000 notes that were on display at the horseshoe for many years.

That would actually be a good compromise to the $500 bill.

At least bring out a $200 bill. That wouldn't make transportation of illegal cash all that much easier.

Service industry staff that make their living off non tax declared tips will hate these. The days of the accidental $100 tips will be few and far between.

Where I live the money does look like Monopoly money.

But contrary to belief the reason money is changed so frequently is for people who launder money. This perhaps a 100 times more money than counterfeiting. The old bills will be recalled recalled some day and when someone shows up with 10 million in old bills they will be asked where they got it. Without good proof how they came accross it, it will be taken from them.

And its more of a pain int he ass to change the bills then you (or I) would think. I had a relative pull me into a family situation where it turned out his depression era grandmother had pulled together a cash horde of $180K... and 80% of it was the old bills from 15-20 years ago. Now obviously this was great news for him and when it comes inheritance time it will be even better. I ended up telling her it was a good idea to swap out the bills, at least the big ones, for newer bills. it took them all of 2 years, a trip to vegas and a dozen trips to foxwoods just to get the 100's swapped out, let alone the 50s and 20s. i told her not to bother with the 10's and 5's.

These bills suck and tear at the hologram strip, I think they'll be dumped due to them wearing out too quickly

yes I am being serious, where the paper meets the hologram tears really easily...not the hologram, the paper just next to it. $100 bills are supposed to last 15 years, there is no way these pieces of junk will.
