    Fun video poker app

I found a good app (only available on the iphone) for learning how to play perfect video poker. The app is called WinPoker. It's expensive as far as apps go at $10 but definitely worth it if you enjoy playing video poker.

I'm fairly confident that with 2-3 months working with this app I'll be able to go pro.

(I saw it posted on Vegas Chatter)

Does it have all of the variations like deuces wild, double bonus, double double bonus, etc?

I'm assuming it does if they're charging $10 for it.

Not sure if the app teaches this, but you also need the proper payouts in order to play +EV or near-even-EV video poker.

Usually the payouts to look at are the flush and full house.

In Jacks or Better, you're looking at 6x your bet for a flush and 9x for a full house. This goes along with the standard 1x for Jacks or better, 2x for 2 pair, 3x for 3 of a kind, 4x for a straight, 25x for four of a kind, 50x for a straight flush, and 4000x for a royal flush (with max coin-in)

The machine described above is a "6-9" machine, referring to the flush-full house payouts, and that is +EV with perfect play and comps. (It's slightly -EV without comps.)

If they downgrade your flush/full house to 5-9, it's -EV, but not by that much.

If they downgrade below that (5-8 is very standard, and some go as low as 5-6), it's very -EV.

I got into playing advantage video poker shortly after black Friday. I would use part of my online profits to fund Vegas trips a few times a year and saw vp as a way to continue the trips without paying much for them. It has worked pretty well too, but I hit a sick downswing (which is totally normal) during my last visit that has me wondering if I may be better served just paying the poker rate and grinding instead.

I was playing 10 line .25 9/6 JOB for $12.50 a hand. I loaded up my $100 in free play and added 9 c-notes for 1k and got down to business. As a side note, I played the same machine my last trip and ran 56k through it in 2 days. My 1k got as low as $250 and as high as $1400 during that time and I finished at $1200 or so. Anyway, after 45 minutes I had binked a royal and was at $2400! I finished that session at $2200 after 5 hours of play. The next day I planned on playing a ton since I had a 3x points coupon which made it a +ev game. Unfortunately, after about 5 hours I was down to the $900 of my money I started with! At that point, I quit and played only real poker for the remainder of my stay.

The Winpoker app is what I use to train with. It comes with a lot of the most common games, but the best thing about it is that you can customize the paytables to fit whatever game you find in the casino.

Another good resource is the Gambling with an Edge radio show archives. Start at the beginning when Frank Kneeland was co hosting and work your way up to the present. Anybody who gambles at all, whether seriously or just for fun needs to listen to those shows. There is just a ton of info and you need not worry about it being inaccurate, unlike some books out there.

Yeah, it has all the variations of video poker.

WinPoker allows you to choose the type of video poker game you want to play with the pay tables you want to play so you can have an accurate simulation and learn to play the right way.

If the pay tables aren’t stock on the game, you can add them.

You can go to vpfree2.com to find where the best video poker games are in just about every casino in America.

    Going pro, son.

The video poker grind has gotten much harder in the last 10 years. The early and mid 90's were the hey day with full pay games in high denominations and slot clubs rewarding at almost one percent. Now you got to play boring 9/6 Jacks and wait for the bounce back mail. Or you have to play high volatility games like progressives.

I played at the Palms and really like the place. They have 3 stellar restaurants in N9ne, Nove and Simon. They have the Pokerati game so I can get my PLO fix and they have a good selection of multi line full pay video poker. The scantily clad vixens running around at night dont hurt either.

Yeah, the casinos have really wised up. Its amazing how clueless they were for a long time. I feel sort of bad for the players who had it so good during those days. A lot of them refuse to or are unable to adjust to the changes that have been made and are left near busto and very bitter. I think they would have been better off never having had it so good to begin with.

Count me as one who just longs for the good old days in every form of gambling. I miss dollar full pay deuces with a one percent card, I miss Matchbook for sports betting and I miss Party and Netteller. No matter how sharp you are it's gotten much harder to make a buck... I'm not about to go get a job but there is much more of a grind to it these days.

Ah yes, the days of Netteller and Party Poker. We had no idea how good we had it! Or at least we didnt know how fleeting our time would be with it so good. Damn gubbermint!

Speaking of government ruining things. Frank Kneeland mentioned that the reason the big progressive vp teams disbanded was due to the IRS making it impractical to hire team members. Wouldnt it still be a good grind for a guy with a couple partners who pooled their bankrolls or even to try and do solo?

It would be in a very small trustworthy group. I don't know why but gamblers love to cannibalize one another.
