Daniel Negreanu goes off on Tom Dwan in interview

    http://www.pokerplayer.co.uk/news/fe...e_picture.html

    Here are some notable quotes:

Today, Negreanu’s ire is centred squarely on one Tom ‘durrrr’ Dwan, who is holding up the filming of a PokerStars vs Full Tilt Poker online grudge match by being four hours late to the Victoria casino in London. Negreanu thinks that because Dwan ‘plays such high stakes and the media is not his passion he neglects it,’ before following with the telling barb. ‘If you’re a sponsored player and you get paid then you better do those things or you are disrespecting your organisation and the game. If you aren’t prepared to do that then don’t wear the patch.’
Having brought up the negative impact online poker had on his own success it felt natural to go back and push him further on Tom Dwan, the undoubted leader of the online generation.

‘I don’t think Tom is one of the best [in the world] – I don’t know if he ever was. He got elevated after his appearances on High Stakes Poker because he ran well and played well, but realistically he doesn’t put in the time or practise playing now [to be one of the best in the world].’ Furthermore, Negreanu thinks the other top players ‘all lick their lips when they think about playing Dwan heads-up’.

It’s difficult in online poker to tell who really is the best player and who is just the best at putting themselves in good situations, as Negreanu explains. ‘A lot of the guys like Dwan, Phil Galfond and the Dang brothers didn’t grind their way to the very top – they just had enough money for the perfect storm when [Cirque Du Soleil owner] Guy Laliberté lost $17m and they all got a piece of that. Any grinders who were able to play in those games would have won that money.’

I think he's right about his first comment (about Dwan basically neglecting the media and living in his own world), but wrong with his second comment. Dwan definitely paid his dues in order to rise to the top to be able to play those nosebleed games with Laliberte.

There probably are online HU players now who are better than Dwan, but you shouldn't take away from him what he's accomplished. Same with Galfond, obviously, who is obviously another great player.

I can see where he's coming from with Dwan. I was never all that impressed with his play. I think Galfond is the nuts though. That guy knows poker through and through. There are a lot of underrated players too though like Isaac Haxton and Phil Gruissem. Both of them consistently play high stakes cash and tournaments and both of them are consistently good at them.

Ike Haxton & Galfond are working and studying the Optimal Game Theory puzzle as evidenced by their posts. Dwan may have amazing intellect but he seems to play by intuition. Negraneanu is not in the hunt. He will assume Doyle's honorary position in a few years.

Nevertheless, Dwan has done more for poker popularity in recent years than the Kid Dinosaur. Negraneanu is a bore and somewhat irrelevant. If your a 20'ish poker player Dwan is a rock star.

I find the whole poker celebrity thing a bore. Haxton & Galfond regularly offer up their thinking and I am able to retain a small fraction for my own game. Galfond seems especially likeable.

So to review: Daniel STFU and be patient.

I think you confused Dwan with Negreanu.

No, just no. Druff is correct in that FTP aka Pokerstars pays Dwan a salary to do these types of things so he should show up on time. I'm sure that it messed up more than just Daniel's scheduled. More people were most likely put off too.

I am a bit older than 20's, but I'd be willing to bet that the younger serious players are looking at Galfond, the Dangs, Jungleman, and probably a few others that I've never heard of. Daniel is correct that Dwan was in the right place at the right time and by today's standards would be considered the fish for HU play. The biggest problem for Dwan imo is that he went to Macua to fleece the businessmen(not that I see that as a bad move) while some of the other high stakes online players moved to Canada or Mexico and continued to play and put in hundreds of thousands of hands and have progressed skill wise.

It is also Laughably ignorant to say that Negreanu is no longer relevant in the poker world. He has won over $1.8 million this year and openly showed his losses on his latest video posting that showed that although he has over $900k in buyins he is up for the year. He will take Doyle's place as the Overall spokesman for the game eventually, but he is still a top tier tourney player today.

Tom Dwan should not get special treatment in this situation just because he's busy playing other games if this was a challenge both Negreanu and Dwan agreed to play at a specific time.

Daniel is one of the most loyal poker players in the mainstream when it comes to handling the media. The Choice Center stuff is LOL but that don't change the fact that Negreanu is as popular as he is because of how he interacts with people in the poker world. He is a very skilled player who has worked hard to continue improving his game over the years while many other players of his generation are now washed up

It's hard to side with Tom Dwan on this one except to say he's young and still hasn't learned how to handle himself properly. This is bad etiquette on his part and Daniel has every reason to feel pissed off about it.

Let's assume this could be postponed a few hours or a day then Dwan owes Daniel the courtesy to give him proper advanced notice that he can't make it on time regardless of the what the reason might be.

As for Dwan's play he is a solid cash game player at least in NLH and PLO but he's atrocious at tournaments. Dwan probably don't have the patience or discipline to even want to play tournaments which is fine by all means but he should kind of know his character and stye don't fit to play them before making outrageous bracelet bets.

Their is another young phenom with the word "dur" in his nickname that is a better cash game player then Dwan atm at least as far as online goes.

I'm not going to start a flame war. I have an obviously different strategy than you and I'm happy to use my strategy as I don't go broke with it.

you must be playing against some seriously weak competition for your "strategies" to be successful in 2013. anyone who is decent at poker just laughs at your strategy posts and moves on

Really, you weren't that impressed with his play? I'm sure he'd be very concerned to hear that you, anonamoose, were not impressed

I would like a nonamoose strat thread please.

I gather dwan can tell pretty much anyone to fuck off if he wants. Pure speculation that I hope is true because I'm sure Danny boy is mad jelly yo.

The only people that bitch about people being late are the less important people of the relationship. If dwan isn't in the pictures negranue suffers. Not looking up how to spell names I'm drinking

You appear to have a very loose definition of the word decent and appears your definition is anyone who has an opinion but isn't me.

Whatever though. I make money with my strategy, so stop being mad.

Both Negreanu and Dwan are fucking over-rated.

If Dwan never played online poker he wouldn't have the big bankroll, like he has now.

And if Negreanu never played tournament poker, he would be fucking broke, and he
wouldn't be playing poker at all. He would probably be a bus driver making $15 an hour.

Dwan doesn't give a shit about promoting online poker or being a "poker celebrity".
He is a degenerate gambler who craves action.

Negreanu is a celebrity whore, who thinks he is as famous as Brad Pitt.

Could acting in gay porn be in their future?
