    Daly's 2014 WSOP Blog

    I'm not a poker pro.

I am a card enthusiast however, always loved the game and like many of you have been playing it since the Moneymaker main event. I never really got into the online poker thing as I just never trusted it for "real money". Up until 2 years ago before I moved to Florida I would make a two hour drive every few weeks to foxwoods and did well playing in the 1-2 NL games there. 6 years ago I managed to negotiate with my wife a 4 day mancation to the WSOP with some pals. Even still I couldn't justify paying $1,500-$5,000 for one event. We were trying to have a kid and I had just built a house with a Boston size mortgage. Well it turned out I had the time of my life and came back a winner to the tune of roughly $2,400. I vowed to come back every year....... The $2,400 I won, like all the other money I had ever won in CT got spent back on life. In this case, a new bedroom set followed by some big expenses at baby R' us the following month (I'd like to think one had to do with the other, and I "won" my daughter in Vegas). And with that my life became more serious then ever. Its hard to have a wife and young child and make a trip to Vegas for the better part of a week, let alone pay all that money for a trip and then potentially lose a big tournament buy in on top of it.

Fast forward a few years and life is a little different. First of all I now have a > 5 year old that isn't nearly as difficult to handle as a 2 year old. As I said I moved to Florida and bought a short sale house with much of the proceeds from the equity after selling my house in Boston. Living in Florida is tremendously less expense to live compared to Boston. With our finances as stable as ever and a much mature child in the house a trip to the 2014 WSOP is back on the table.

One of the added bonuses of living in Florida is having 5 different large live poker rooms within a 45 min drive. I have been able to play on average 2-3 times a week for multiple hours. On balance it's been a profitable endeavor. April-May was my best poker stretch ever having won almost $11K. With the proceeds I have really spoiled the family, we fixed the pool pump, bought a 8 night cruise in a suite, two new I-Pads, flights to visit family in Boston, new breaks on Car, paid for wife's physical trainer. It was all found money so we had a great time with it and I have no resentments at all. Now that I have crossed a lot wish list things off the family list, its time to address my wish list. I got the Wife to agree to a separate poker roll for the sole purpose of winning airfare, hotel and any seat/seats to WSOP events that I can manage. This blog is going to chronicle my efforts to get to Vegas next Summer. If everything breaks right I'd like to play in the $3K PLO8 and one of the $1.5K Holdem.

    Rules to the Roll:

Roll Starts with $1,000 - a $500 second bullet under my mattress somewhere and 5 black chips that were already acquired. Win lose or draw the chips never get translated back to cash. This is so the money stays separate and winnings don't get spent as "found money".

    Games to be played:

    1-2 with a 5 bring in PLO8 - my game of choice

5-10NL with a $300 max buy - a strange game thats a Florida Relic from the days of $100 max buy ins. Plays like the loosest 1-2 game you have ever seen.

$125 PLO8 tournaments that get played every now and again, they are rare however.

$365 PLO8 WSOP Circuit Event at Plam Beach KC in Feb.

    High Hands/Jackpot

Any high hand money or tournament winnings from tournament tickets won will be credited to the Roll

Fri Night 7/26 - Starting Chip balance $500

    + 255 - Ending Chip Balance $755

The PLO8 game broke early for a Friday night and I missed the game so I played 5/10. Not a lot of notable hands as it was a ABC night. Bought in for $200. Got as High as $600 after turning a nut flush and Flopping top set of kings that faded a flush. Ended the night loosing 150 with Aces to a short stack that called off with J-10 on a J-X-X flop (J river).

Might try and play tonight and I do want to maximize Fri and Sat night play.

Frustrating night for sure. It was a "half night". Put the kid to bed. Put the wife to bed. Go play from 9PM to midnight or so. By the time I got to the poker room I was #1 on the PLO8 list after calling in. I didn't get on the table till 11:15. I played a soft 1-2NL game and made $96 with real basic ABC stuff. Bought into the PLO8 game for $ 250 and played for 45 min when I woke up to Ad-3d-5x-Jx. Played for $25 pre with 3 others and saw a 2d-4x-Jd flop. I jammed the flop and got raised all in by J-J-x-x. Turn 5 river 9.

The worst kind of poker night. The night when you buy into a game, a very good game with a weak lineup, double up twice in the first 30 minutes and slowly give it all back. It was the dreaded loss by a hundred paper cuts. In four hours I must of had middle pocket pairs 15 times and not only did I never make a set every board was wet with suits and Broadway cards. And every time I would call off with a speculative hand like Q-J it was a 5-6-7 flop with a bet and raise.

I should have known it was going to turn to pot when my second double up with jacks full got beat for the high hand with less then 1 min to go for $250.

16 hours in..... up $105. Good thing I didn't quit my job.

I may be able to play during the day this week if my work schedule allows it. If not I'll play one other night and on Saturday night I'm going ot play in a PLO8 tournament.

IT WAS the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us......

    Starting chip balance $605. Ending chip balance 8/2 @ 7:30 PM $0 A loss of ($602).
    Second bullet - $500. Ending chip balance at 7:55 $0 A loss of ($500).

Down ($1,102) in about 25 minutes. Very first hand I got stacked for $500. Picked up 5-3 in the BB on a 6-4-3 board. Turn 3 River 5..... villain had 6-6. Then about 10 minutes later I got picked off for $375 more set over set. The rest got put in A-K < A-Q. on a A-9-3 board (Turn Q).

Just a real shit show. The 5-10 table(s) I play at were full so I sat in on 2-5 where the players are actually better. After getting fucked sideways in less then a half an hour I did the Degen thing and decided to stick around go to the ATM and get one $300 bullet for the 5-10 game. 10 min later they opened a new table.

Starting chip balance $300. Ending balance $2,062!!! Pay back $800 - new chip count $1,262.

I fucking cracked heads. It helped that 4 of the players at the table are habitual donators to the game. Flopped the stones with Ah-10h on a all heart board. Had two of them pay me off on every street with the naked Kh and Jh and a pair, and got a jam from the Kh when the fourth heart fell on the river.

Thanks man. Even though PLO8 is my "best game", what I think it for the past year or so the one table my local runs has a great lineup. I think the word is out about this game and the table I sat at this afternoon had a few new players that were very good. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm going to concentrate more on game selection more during the dog days of summer here in south florida. I'm starting to consider playing more 5-10 100-300 buy in. Its great action and I have had just as good results and some tables are just plain juicy.

Played PLO8 today and ran into a very tight very tough table. Never got anything going except a huge wrap with a 9-10-J-Q on a 8-9-K flop. that turned a 10.

I'm taking the night off tonight and tomorrow afternoon is my daughters birthday party. Tomorrow night I'm headed to the Isle in pompano to play in a PLO8 tournament.

Starting chip balance $1,029. Ending chip balance 8/2 $849. $175 for tournament fees and a instant rebuy.

Great tournament last night. 30 players. When we got down to 18 players I was third in chips and got it all in with the guy in second.

My 8-9-10-j vs his A-K-10-9 on a Q-J-2 board. I was actually a 5% favorite when I put it in the calculator last night.

I actually set a record to start the tournament. I went 1:08, about 40ish hands without ONE ace in my hand. How is that even possible?

Another best of times worst of times night. Got to the poker room a little late at 8:40, no Omaha and two 5-10 tables with a 5 man list. And once again I'm ashamed to admit I lost over $300 at 1-2, all though $200 was on one hand with Ah9h on a 6h-7x-8h board K-K call.

But then after 3 hours of waiting I got called for the 5-10 and started to smash faces in. Had a great read on a asian where I called him all the way down with K-9 on a K heart heart board full well knowing he was on a heart draw +300.

The hand of the night was completing $10 in the SB with 6 other in the hand with 10-7 and seeing a 6c-8c-9 flop. With the action the way it was I checked and amanged to get someone to bet 40 and got two other callers. I decided to play it slow as everyone was deep stacked. Turn a Ace, a great card. I checked and he fired $100 and three callers. Not only did I fade a Club on the river and avoid the board pairing, the river was a 5 making a loose 7 a st8. At this point I fired $350 a picked up one caller with a 7. Nice $850ish profit.

Anyways we are keeping this moving in the right direction.

that is what you call a GREAT game!!! going to assume there was some action on the flop and that it didn't just check through? the 356x is just fucking awful...the AA isn't any better unless he had a wheel card to go with the AA...

It was a great game.... just goes to show how bad I run sometimes. I the AA had 6-7 or something on board I dont remember exactly. We had $400ish in the middle on the flop, 120*3 plus a few limper. AA bet pot on flop, wrap called, i shoved for $275 more, call... wrap tanked held his nose and called.

It just sucks that I had the A-A shove nightmare hand and I got counterfeited twice.

    Current balance $1,201 - won $200ish tonight.

Again i had to dig myself out of a $300 hole to start the night with a-2-4-6 on a 3-5-x flop that went brick brick four way.

    ***** BIG NEWS ******

Boss is out for the week... and there is nobody to check in on me so I basically get to play Poker during the day all week so long as I have my blackberry in tow. Here is to a GREAT WEEK.

Good Christ I feel like I keep telling the same story. Flopped top 2 and a redraw to the third nut club flush.... a former PLO bracelet winner shoves into me with Aces first to act, I jam back at him for $150 more and he tanks and calls to complete at $450 pot. All he has is Ad-Ax-10x-2d and of course the board runs out D-D for the runner runner backdoor flush.

    Scoop: 68.41%
    Hi: 84.88% Hi Tie: 0.00%
    Lo: 0.00% Lo Tie: 0.00%

But - saving grace for the first time in a long time I flopped eight tits.... that is quad queens and it held for a $250 high hand. I broke even on the session.

    Current total $1,201

I'm going out tonight and I'm playing 5-10.
