I hate any ads, especially ones that I am forced to navigate around such as the pretend email ads gmail launched with their new client update.
Thankfully there is already a firefox/chrome/opera plugin to take care of them.

Then goto inbox settings and remove the new tabs that basically hide your mail in different drawers so you have to look for it.

adblock was all you needed until this latest update of gmail that they are rolling out now.

Adblock plus (and the element block helper) absolutely still blocks all the ads in the new inbox for me. Maybe you just use a bad/older blocklist?
