Ever loaned money to a friend? How'd that go?

I've done it several times over the past few years, and it hasnt gone particularly well, but I at least got repaid eventually by 3 of the 5. The worst one is the most recent.

This friend came up to my area to do some work. Tall, floppy haired guy. Lets call him "Shamble-Rot" (Shamble for short).

Shamble comes up to my neck of the woods to do some work. He apparently is a jack of all trades and does work for all kinds of industries. Well, Shamble asks if he can crash with me for several weeks, so being the friend that I am, I tell him absolutely, and even make him his own set of keys. Shamble and I go out, and we even invite my friend "El Guapo" out with us. We all go gambling and Shamble goes broke and borrows some cash from us. He then "Micon's" at the craps table so we all leave. He writes El Guapo a check, which neither of us wanted to receive, just cash, and then leaves town. I assume he will repay me soon, as I could use that money to pay some bills.

A few weeks go by, and Guapo gives me the check because I was going to use it to pay for some bills for us.

"Hey Shamble, I just deposited that check today". Shamble says that wasnt a good idea and that it will likely bounce. Too late, it bounces, and I get hit with a few fees.

"Shamble, when are you going to fix this?".

    Soon.

Days go by. Nothing. I text him. I call him. No response. Repeat every day for a few days. Nothing.

Finally, I get a "Stop fucking texting me or I will block you" response.

<not good....my friend is going through some shit, clearly>

Then he tells me he is working on it and cant talk.

Its odd, because I get to see photos of him balling it up with his female friends on Facebook.

Really Shamble?....you dont have a minute or two to speak? You dont seem all that busy....odd.....odd I say....

Next comes text message "reason" as to why its taking so long.

"Shamble, I NEED to know when you are sending a check!...I have to pay a bill early next week so please let me know"

"It will be there Saturday..Monday at the latest"

Are you sure? I need this to happen.

    YES

    Saturday passes....no check
    Monday passes....no check.

"I can access your account info through Chase. I will transfer it"

"My bills were due! WTF!!" Two late fees due to me trusting him since he gave his word I would have the money.

    Tuesday: "Sorry...something came up"
Wednesday "<insert completely irrelevant to our situation excuse here> I WILL CALL YOU"

Thursday: no response. I text and call both his phone lines. No response.
Friday: "I need the money by tonight. I have to pay a large bill by tomorrow morning." No response

Today: (keep in mind, its now been around 6 weeks or so of excuses)
    no response.

Im now blowing up his cell phone with Celebrity Soundboards just to get a chuckle.

Loaning money to a friend is almost always a no win situation.

    1. If you charge interest you are kind of dick and even if friend agrees to pay back with interest part of him will think you are a dick.
    2. If he doesnt pay you back on time then the friendship usually suffers
    3. If you ask him about the loan and why he is late many times he will make you out like the bad guy.

Basically the best case scenario is that he pays you back and thanks you which from my experience doesn't happen often. The risk almost always outweighs the reward.

    great points.

We were just stuck because we were at the craps table when he asked for it. It was hard to say no to a friend.

    lesson learned.

My gut is that he will not pay me because I texted him (going to do it again right now in fact with the Joe Peschi soundboard) too often, which is ALWAYS legitimate grounds for not paying.

"HEY...I was eventually going to pay you a year from now, but since you kept calling me when I avoided you like a pussy, go fuck yourself".

    Standard.

I've noticed if you lend someone like 5-20 bucks you're almost never going to get it back, so I usually just give it to them with the intention of never getting it back.

If you loan a couple hundred that's a little more 50/50 in getting it back and is worth blackballing them.

When I've loaned over 1k I've always gotten it back, but that's because I verify things a bit more and usually take a decent collateral.

Loaning money to friends and family is a recipe for disaster unless you know they are good for it. I've loaned people when I know they have the money or will get paid tomorrow if it's a small amount like $100 or less otherwise I don't want the tension it causes.

People lose friendships over money all the time so whenever I'm approached if I didn't feel the person was in the place to pay me back I just say "I'm sorry, I don't even loan people money or ask people if they will loan me money it's just not something I do". If someone is your real friend they will respect this and just go try to find the money elsewhere otherwise if they are one of the Micon's in the world then you could lose a friendship over it but if they let it come to that point then you realize that person wasn't as true of a friend as you thought they were.

I was always under the impression his now ex-wife came from money, and he was always hustling to try and get some kind of business going.

He talked about being cash poor quite a few times.

Don't ever loan $$$ to friends or family unless you get the terms of repayment in writing. In fact take something or worth from them so you can be sure you don't come out on the bottom end of the deal. To ignore my advice is a rescipe for disaster.

Like anyone with more than $10 US in their pocket - he was kidnapped in Venezuela in 2005 when visiting family.

He turned up later and coaches in minor leagues. He has no money either.

I once loaned $60k to someone who I considered a good friend, had good collateral, and was in a tight spot. Big mistake. He owned several houses so I had him sign a promissory note along with a provision to take ownership of one house that he had a lot of equity in. I didn't know it, but he was a big time druggy. He eventually defaulted, and after several months, I took possession of the house and subsequently sold it. I made out large at his misinformation, but really felt bad about it. I have never seen him since. Poor bastard, he had a lot of assets and a lot going for him, but the drugs did him in. Trying to be a good guy and loaning money to a friend usually results in a bad outcome. Unless it's family and I understand the circumstances, I won't ever loan money to friends preferring to keep their friendship intact.

I wouldn't loan anybody an amount of money that would make any difference in my lifestyle. I also never go to a casino or poker game & gamble money I'm not prepared to lose. I also never stake money I'm not fully prepared to never see again.

If you're counting on somebody to pay a debt to you in order to pay your everyday bills then you're doing something wrong. I'm not saying what you're doing wrong but you're doing something wrong.

This is a lesson that unfortunately I have had to learn the hard way many times over, at least with "loans" and friends.

Simply put... Friends and money don't mix.

I thought it was pretty shitty to write a check when I loaned him cash... He wrote the check and put "gay sex" in the memo... It made me chuckle... but knew I was screwed when he left the next day. Drk is friends with him so he said I could sign the check over to him and that he would give me cash because he was sure he would not screw him over... Per the usual Drk made good on his promise and now he is the one who gets screwed. I hope it's just a misunderstanding and gamble makes good on what he owes, he's good people, but it's shitty taking advantage of Drk. Maybe it's shitty of me for signing over the check to Drk knowing it was probably no good even though he offered it. Who knows... I just hate the situation.
