Owed $5 from the Supermarket....

So last night I went to Publix and brought 3 $20 bills with me. Anyway, I ended up getting $13.xx worth of stuff. I handed the cashier a $20 bill, she gave me change and I threw it in the plastic bag along with the receipt. When I leave I realize she gave me the wrong amount of change. I only have $1.xx in change instead of $6.xx. I look at the receipt and sure enough it indicates that I paid with $15, which I know for 100% sure is not correct. What do you think my play is at this point? I didn't want to go back to the grocery store last night because I had plans. Should I go back today and mention what happened? Should I just eat the $5? What do you think my chances are with them believing/being able to verify my story? Do you think the world is mad at me, and this is going to happen another 219 times?

I'll probably go down there this afternoon, so I'll post updates in this thread. And yes, I am 100% positive that I gave the cashier a $20

This is a tough spot to be in because 9 out of 10 times this complaint happens the person is scamming the store. I would eat the $5 because: 1) it's not a lot of money 2) you should have checked when you got the change 3) it will probably take a good 30-60 minutes to get your $5 back.

A similar thing happened to me when we cashed in some scratch tix we got at Christmas. A couple months ago we went to the grocery store and I happened to look in the glove box for a napkin and found $33 in scratch tix that I put there on Christmas eve. So we brought them in and my wife goes to the service desk. about 15 minutes later she shows up and hands me the money... $28. Now this happened minutes ago (with the same employee) so she goes back up and it took literally 30 minutes for them to believe her and count down the drawer, TWICE, and such. I can only imagine if we went back the next day.

Moral of the story; when someone hands you change, a receipt, etc. look at it and check it.

yeah, sorta leaning towards eating it because it's only $5 and it'll probably take them forever to verify my story. My sister used to work for Publix and says they have cameras on the register, but it'll probably take a while to review it.

And they can check her till amount at the end of the day, but she may have pocketed the $5, or it may be off by giving somebody else incorrect change as well

Steve's post gave me an idea. Go to the store and instead of complaining about the $5, tell them you believe they have an employee scamming their customers. That they will be interested in hearing. Then tell them how they do it. Ringing in the wrong amount and pocketing the change. The register balances so they don't notice. That might get them interested in checking the tapes.

The only customer scamming they want done in the store is them adding water to your weighed foods and re-tagging expired food and such.

Well I just went down there and it took about 90 seconds to resolve. The lady says to me "Okay, I can check our balances from last night and if it's over I can just give you the money, but if it's not then there's not really anything we can do about it." If she told me it wasn't over, I was definitely asking for her manager because that basically means the cashier was trying to steal from me. She looks at my receipt to see which register, goes in the little back office, and comes out in 30 seconds and says "Yep, it's over by $5". She goes to the register and hands me a fiver and apologizes for the mistake. I say that it was no problem and I head out. Easy game.

This is why Publix dominates the Southeast. You won't see that happen at a fucking Wal*Mart Grocery
