The final round is on ESPN later tonight at 8pm EST. I watched a few minutes of it today since not much on in the afternoon and the Top 10 is always like 7 Pakistan/Indian/Iran/ whatever males, 2 females from those races, and one random white girl. COME ON CAUCASIAN MALES! WHERE YOU AT?

The Asian kids are predominantly first-generation Indian-Americans. They value academic competition highly. My Indian friends at work wager on the home state (Uttar Pradesh FTW!) of the winner's family. The winner will undoubtedly put in a tremendous amount of work.

My son went to the Nationals last year, which we considered a major achievement! He's a good speller, but couldn't crack the Top 50. He did spell both his words on ESPN3 correctly. The audio/written test was his downfall. He finished second in our region this year. Winner - Indian female. 3rd place - Indian male.

- The kid who just went out 8th, Chetan Reddy, is a nice kid. Met him last year. (That's a good finish, but he told me he was winning this year.)

- Vismaya's dad gets some airtime! He's a game developer. He works on Disney games now, but impressed me by game-dropping "Links". Old school! She went out fifth, I thought she had a chance.

- Arvind's looking good. He's as close to a pro as an eigth-grader gets. I like his chances in the final four.

- words like Amber's hallali are these kids' worst nightmare. If you don't know it, there are no Latin or Greek roots to go on.

- Arvind had trouble with German previously. That seems to be a weak link for most. (Evan experienced a little schadenfreude at knowing most of the German words the Indian super-spellers missed.)

- Amber's exit interview just confirmed that the finalists have no life. You knew this, obv. You don't get to that point without some serious sacrifice.
