This is about what I spent on a similar Lenovo machine earlier last year and I'm happy with it.

    $285 is tough to beat.

This is basically the same laptop I'm on now, it works just fine for me but I paid slightly more at the time of purchase.

i hardly ever restart my laptop and just keep a shitload of tabs open, have you had any problems with this?

    Same here, no problems.

I decided several years ago that I was going to go with cheap laptops mainly due to the seemingly exponential advancements in technology. What is expensive today is obsolete tomorrow.

The compaqs and HPs I've had seem to work well, and I agree with you on Gateways and Toshibas.

I liked the cheap Levono so much I bought another when my Gateway finally went tits. I've had zero problems.

i agree about buying inexpensive laptops, the only problem is you can get one that does everything you need or for the same price get a piece of shit but that lenovo sounds like just what i'm looking for

and at just $284, i won't feel bad if i need to replace it in a year or two

Many of these requested are probably suffice enough for most people but I'm a tech junkie so I shell out like $1200 each time I get a laptop for a solid processor, memory, two HDs, NVIDIA graphics card, and 17 inch screen with 1920x1080 (damn bastards took away 1920x1200 in laptops).

I'd stay away from Toshiba as well. I bought a Gateway once and at the time I got it the thing was solid BUT three years later the piece of shit graphics card fried which it was built into the motherboard which means I was fucked so they are shit and I will never buy a Gateway again.

do big box electronic stores have any option for people NOT wanting windows 8?

what i mean is, can i pay $20 more or whatever and get windows 7 instead?

every review i read people hate windows 8, except on a tablet or ultrabook

i remember a thread where china hated windows 8 at first, did you get use to it or just go back to 7?

    edit:
    btw i don't own a legal copy of 7 i can install

Honestly for what you want the laptop for, I'm guessing you could get used to it. Unless you REALLY find it, I don't know, aesthetically displeasing.

FTR: this is coming from someone who still uses Vista.

at $90 more than the lenovo, why is the asus better?

looks like the chip is faster, and video card?

this is a serious question, i honestly am not very educated as far as software/hardware

Their are some really good deals on refurbs but you roll the dice with them even though many have some type of warranty they come with.

Its an ACER, I personally trust them more than Lenovo...but just IMO. Yes as you said, faster proc and vid, slightly lighter weight. That Lenovo is a good deal though....assuming Best Buy doesn't go out of business before you get it
