    Futurama has questionable future

    Futurama has been canceled.

It was originally canceled in 2003, after an erratic run on FOX.

It got revived in 2008 with four straight-to-DVD movies, which were later split up into four parts each, making 16 episodes.

Again, in 2009, the DVDs were considered the last hurrah for the series, and it was declared to most likely be done.

Then, in 2010, Comedy Central picked up the show, and two thirteen-episode seasons were commissioned. However, the show was far from certain to be renewed, so again the writers made the final episode that season into an expected series finale. (The same was done in 2003, as well as 2009 with the last DVD.)

It got renewed for two more 13-episode seasons, the latter of which will conclude on September 4, 2013.

However, Comedy Central has announced that it will not be renewed.

Unless they make more straight-to-DVD videos or get the series renewed elsewhere, it's probably gone for good.

Here are some clips from the final 13 episodes, slated to begin airing in June:

I am a huge Futurama (and Simpsons) fan. Neither the DVD stuff nor the Comedy Central episodes have been nearly as good as the old FOX episodes.

The episode Time Keeps on Slippin, featuring the Harlem Globetrotters, is among my favorite TV episodes of all time.

I didn't watch many of the newer episodes, but I loved this show during its original run.

Futurama had some extraordinarily smart writers. One of them has a PhD in applied mathematics and actually devised a real mathematical theorem (now known as the Futurama theorem) for a plot device, in that mind-switching episode.

The show was full of nerdy jokes like this, most of which probably sailed over my head and certainly over those of most viewers. The first time I noticed this was in an episode where a horse race came down to a quantum finish, and Farnsworth complained that they changed the outcome by measuring it. I couldn't believe someone actually bothered to write a joke about the observer effect. It was awesome.

I agree that the old FOX episodes were the best, for the most part.

They showed some rust in their writing when the series returned in 2010, but they did improve somewhat as the newer seasons wore on.

The DVDs suffered from the same problem that all of these animated shows have when they attempt to make a movie: They're not just not suited for it. All of these shows work best as self-contained, 30-minute episodes. They aren't meant to tell a long, cohesive story.

Was this just due to bad ratings? I figured it was doing pretty well on CC.

I just looked up the ratings-

    http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/201...o-more/145110/

It got crushed by House Hunters, got half the viewers of American Pickers, got beat by King of the Hill reruns, and barely squeaked past Paranormal Witness.

It was a pretty bad idea to produce an expensive original series on Comedy Central, anyway.

No. It was just a bad idea to produce a relatively expensive show that was scraping the bottom of the barrel after 7 seasons.

Show was unwatchable, never understood why it went as long as it did. Would rather watch Ren and Stimpy reruns.
