Really was awful writing after season 2. Every season it was the same formula.

Season 2 was the best, but Season 5 was great.
From the news report to announce a bunch of Mob guys were getting out. (Buscemi, Robert Loggia, Frank Vincent, etc)
and ending w/Adriana. IMO the best scene of the series.

I'll take all the red marks you can give......Sopranos is the series that changed it all. It is the 1st series where TV was better than the movies.

I thought OZ was pretty average. Some story lines were pretty riveting, but a lot was fast forward material.

    Fuck MacManus.

Oz was fucking revolutionary when it started but it turned into a one-trick pony pretty fast.

And I don't think anyone is making the case that Oz was better than The Sopranos. Only that Oz was the foundation that all other cable shows were built on.

If you really want to be historically accurate, all this sprang from The Larry Sanders Show.

Dead serious. It was such a runaway success, an entire production department was built to address the market it created.

Anyone know the first show that didn't wrap the story at the end of every episode? I have no clue. Hill Street Blues, maybe?

Well if we are going to go there I'll see your Larry Sanders Show and Raise you a "HBO First and Ten".

This was the first time that I'm aware that HBO figured out the normal rules of network TV didn't apply to them and there may actually be a market for "adult" programming.

Hill Street Blues was the first to curse on the air IIRC. And NYPD Blue was the first to show a mans ass on network TV I think..? If Im wrong, fuck it, we are talking 20+ years ago, but kinda pretty sure..

You might be onto something tho. I cant think of anything before it that did those run-on storylines.

Fair but 1st & Ten didnt have the market penetration or the accolades that Larry Sanders Show did; Larry Sanders Show was the first (and arguably last) smart adult sitcom.
