It's very common for people to believe (falsely) that they're more proficient at tasks when drunk or high. Much study has been done the subject.

I agree with this. I play best when buzzed with a combo of booze and Ritalin. The Ritalin keeps me sharp while the booze brings out the machismo so that bluffers have little or no effect on me.

Define success. Some people cut themselves so they can prove they are alive. Maybe you want to go broke and wake up covered in your own vomit and call that a successful night. Anyone with an IQ over 70 knows what alcohol does to their decision making skills.
