Brian Urlacher Era in Chicago is Over After 13 Years

"The 34-year-old Urlacher, an eight-time Pro Bowl player, started 180 games from 2000 through 2012, recording a team-record 1,779 tackles. The ninth overall selection in the 2000 draft has 41.5 sacks, 22 interceptions, 16 fumble recoveries and 11 forced fumbles. He was the AP's defensive player of the year in 2005 and helped lead the 2006 team to the Super Bowl."

Why? It's just like the Colts not resigning Dwight Freeney. Both guys were great for a lot of years, but they're not anymore. In the modern NFL, if you pay guys superstar money for mediocre performance, you have to skimp at other positions. Then you're going to lose games when the other team attacks your weakness.

I dont think anyone was fearing Urlacher the last few years. He was losing a step, and people were figuring out a few years ago how to block him.

    fresh legs needed.

Freeney was a fine player for many years, but Urlacher is in the conversation as one of the all time great middle linebackers and a Chicago legend.

Urlacher is and was a much better player than Freeney. But they are both years removed from their prime, and their long-time team's GMs know it. The salary cap makes the NFL a cruel business. What you've done previously means nothing.

Look at Urlacher's stats and tell me he hasn't fallen off. If you extrapolate those 53 tackles last year to 16 games, it's still 70, by far the worst of his career.

I agree with you 100% and it was the right move for the Bears, but I understand why Bears fans would feel this one.

Guy was offered $2M for what we all know will be a mediocre year. They missed the playoffs with him last season, and they can miss it without him.

The Bears have a new head coach, and I would not want some guy in the locker room talking about the good old days from their Superbowl run, just cut ties. Guy is old and slow in NFL years and really sounded like a douche bag when Tim Tebow blew him up, calling him a runningback after his defense blew it on Monday night football a couple years ago.

Same thing would have happened to Ray Lewis if he had decided to stick around. You also don't see Baltimore being in much of a hurry to resign Ed Reed.

    Getting old sucks.

Look at the last 2-3 seasons of what Takeo Spikes has done, and that is what Urlacher has coming up, if he decides to keep going.

I feel for Spikes, he was just as good as Urlacher or Lewis in his prime but was always stuck on shitty teams. Takeo still has somehow never played a playoff game in his career, and he's 36, and looking for a job again.

Brian Urlacher is a top five defensive player of the 2000's.

Dwight Freeney had a shorter prime but still was fundamental in a super bowl win, and is a top fifteen defensive player of the 2000's

Takeo Spikes ain't in the top fourty, bro.

    oh well then...that settles it....LOL

Spikes was a beast who played for some shitty teams. It happens in football to plenty of players at various positions....and the reverse can happen as well. Like in your vaunted reference, how Marvin harrison is 1st team and TO second team. TO was a much better receiver than Harrison, but of course Harrison had Peyton throwing to him for his entire career.

If Spikes ever played with some decent talent around him, he would have been on that list.

Some teams don't mind putting up some good money for quality veterans that can help a young team grow. Urlacher is a perfect example of a great guy to have in the locker room who has done it all in the NFL and that could spread that knowledge to the younger guys. Chicago is just not in the need for that at this time. We already have guys like Briggs and Julius Peppers who can play that role and who can still be productive. No need to keep Urlacher around. I hope he gets paid a lot of money to play for another team... he deserves it.
