Harrah's Rincon spa cheated me out of 15-20 minutes massage time, then tried to cover it up

(This is a long story. If you don't have a good 10 minutes to read this, check back later.)

I just spent a weekend at Harrah's Rincon.

For those unfamiliar with the property, it is a California Indian casino that is "managed" by Harrah's, which is a roundabout way of saying that Harrah's/Caesar's found a legal loophole to operate a casino within the state of California.

It is located in northern San Diego county, about 45 miles from San Diego itself.

It's basically in the middle of nowhere, and there's little to do at the property itself or in the immediate area, but if you can get a free stay there, it's useful if you want to visit the San Diego area and just use it as a place to sleep.

I recently got some nice offers to stay there, including free room, free food, free play, and $150 free spa credit. Note that "free" is kind of a misnomer here. This wasn't a gift, but rather as an offer because of my heavy play at Caesar's, as is common to give to any Seven Stars member.

The $150 spa credit was good for a "90 minute" massage. This massage is not actually 90 minutes of massage time, but rather a 90-minute block of time where you get massaged for 80 minutes, and the other 10 minutes involve getting undressed, putting your clothes in your locker, walking to the massage room, etc. They told me this in advance and I fully understood.

The only problem was that I was not able to get an appointment for 90 minutes, because it was a busy weekend there and they were full. I reluctantly accepted a 50-minute massage instead, and got on their waiting list in case a 90-minute spot opened up.

On Saturday afternoon, they called me...

A 90-minute massage spot opened at 9am Sunday morning.

This was perfect, as I had to leave the hotel relatively early (11am-ish). I snap-accepted it.

My appointment time was 9:00am-10:30am. Recall that there are only 80 minutes of massage time, so as long as I got into the massage room by 9:10am, I would get my full 80 minutes of massage. It is this way by design, so people who come at their appointment time have 10 minutes to get ready.

I got down there about 9:08, got undressed, and walked into the massage room. I saw a digital clock on the table reading 9:13, which seemed accurate. Basically, I was 3 minutes late, and knew I'd probably only be getting a 77-minute massage instead of 80, which was obviously no big deal.

My massage therapist was a white woman who appeared to be in her 40s. The massage was okay -- not great, not bad. However, when she announced it was over, it felt like time had flown. It didn't seem at all like 77 minutes had passed.

"I'm going to leave the room while you get dressed. Come out when you're done," she said, exiting the room. This is very standard for the end of massages at spas.

However, one thing wasn't standard at all:

When I got up, I noticed the digital clock had been turned off!

Why on earth would a regular digital clock in the room have been turned off between the time my massage started and ended? It wasn't a timer -- it was an acutal clock. I had no idea what time it was, since my watch and phone were in my locker.

I went out into the locker room, and saw the bad news on my phone: 10:16am

Keep in mind it took me a few minutes to get out up, get out there, and open my locker, so the massage probably ended around 10:13, making it a 60-minute massage!

At this point, I had to figure out what to do. I really didn't feel like getting dressed, going to the front, arguing for my 15-20 minutes I was shorted, and then getting all undressed again just to complete the time they stiffed me. But I was also pissed that they did this, especially since it was a spa located in a Harrah's property, and not some shady back-alley operation where you would expect this sort of thing.

(Keep in mind that the spa is owned by Caesar's, and is NOT a third-party company renting the space.)

I went to the front and the manager happened to be there. I said, "You see it's 10:18 now, right?" She said yes. I said, "I was supposed to have a 90-minute massage. My appointment time was at 9:00. Do the math and you'll see it's impossible for me to be out here talking to you if I wasn't shorted time."

She confirmed that something was indeed wrong, and went to go find the therapist, who "could not be located".

She then came back and said that she could comp me a 50-minute massage later in the day to make up for it. I told her that I had to leave and wouldn't be able to do that. She then gave me her business card where she signed that I could have a free 50-minute massage next time I came back. I wouldn't be back there for at least a few months (maybe longer), but I accepted it. There was nothing else that could be done, since I "paid" for the massage with a comp, and I was leaving immediately afterwards.

I was a bit annoyed that she had me sign for the $150 comp to be transferred to the spa since I didn't really get what I paid for, but I decided not to argue because this was just an internal budgeting thing within Harrah's Rincon, and not really my problem to deal with.

Before I left, I requested one more thing:

"When you do speak to the therapist, can you please find out what happened and call me?"

The manager agreed to do this.

I found the whole situation very odd for a few reasons:

    1) My actual massage lasted about 60 minutes. There are no 60-minute massages sold at that spa. They are either 50 or 80. Therefore, there's no way the therapist just got confused and thought she was doing a 50-minute one, as this lasted 60.

    2) The clock was on when I got there, but off when she left. This was highly suspicious.

    3) Despite being "unable to find" the therapist to question her, the therapist then showed up on the side of the counter as I was talking to the manager, and the manager ignored her. The therapist then walked away after a few minutes.

The manager called me and the conversation went like this:

Manager: I talked to the therapist, and she said the clock was working when she walked out of the room, and it read 10:19. So you were still shorted, but not as much, and she said the clock was on.

Me: It wasn't 10:19. When I was out there talking to you, it was 10:18. How could that be possible?

Manager: I think the clock might have been messed up because of daylight savings time. We've fixed it now.

Me: So why was I shorted?

Manager: I don't know, but I gave you that 50-minute comp massage for next time, so that should make up for it.

Me: So as her manager you didn't bother to ask her why she intentionally quit my massage early and cheated me out of time?

Manager: I think she needed to get ready for the appointment after you at 10:30. You know, change the sheets, stuff like that. You did come in late, remember.

Me: I thought you told me my appointment time was 9-10:30. So that meant if I got in there at 9:10 or any time after, my massage should continue until 10:30, right?

    Manager: Yes.

Me: And even she admits to quitting at 10:19, which was more like 10:13. As the spa manager, that seems okay to you?

Manager: Ummm... ummm... well, there was a problem with the clock, and um... well, I made sure it's fixed now.

Me: No, I know what happened. The therapist overbooked and had an appointment at 10:30, so she needed to cut some time off my appointment so she could take a break and prep the room for the next person. And she turned off the clock before walking out, hoping I wouldn't notice that I got cheated.

Manager: Umm.... well.... what would you like me to do for you to make this right?

Me: You knew this the whole time. Why did you lie to me with this ludicrous daylight savings time story? This shouldn't be happening at a spa owned by Caesar's.

Manager: I'd really like to make this right for you in some way. I offered you that 50-minute thing but it seems like maybe you aren't happy with that anymore.

Me: I think I'd like to talk to your boss. Who do you report to?

    Manager: The hotel manager.

Me: Tell him I want to talk to him, and have him call me.

The hotel manager didn't call me for the next few hours, even though he was in. I decided to call him at about 4pm. He said he was just about to call me.

Basically, the spa manager lied to him and said that I showed up late for my appointment and was unhappy that I didn't get my full massage time despite that, which obviously is not at all what happened.

I explained the full situation to him, and he believed me by the end. It seemed he was going to take action regarding this, but you never know what actually ends up happening. I asked him what was going to be done for me for this entire mess, and he offered to "repeat the 80 minute massage next time" I come to the property. I accepted this, but asked for the spa to also cover the customary gratuity (that is, the spa will pay the massage therapist what I would otherwise be tipping). He agreed.

I told him that my situation likely wasn't the first, and there's a decent chance the spa is routinely cheating people out of time.

What do I think happened in my case?

I believe the spa knew that I had a $150 voucher and was hungry for it (since Total Rewards transfers that money over to them). However, being unable to get me a 90-minute appointment, they could only have part of it. I am guessing that the therapist originally had a 9-10am appointment and another one at 10:30, but the 9am canceled and opened up. This didn't leave time to prep in between mine and the next one, but they offered it to me anyway, being afraid that it would go unused otherwise. (The spa opens at 9, so it's not that likely someone would be waiting to grab it as a walk-in.) She probably just figured she would short me some time, turn off the clock, and I probably wouldn't notice by the time I went out to the locker room and got all dressed/showered/whatever.

I am guessing that the spa is primarily visited by dumb housewives who don't pay much attention to this sort of thing because their rich husband is footing the bill, so they are used to getting away with shit like this.

I think the whole thing was really dirty, especially turning off the clock so I wouldn't catch them. That's worse than just shorting me time. That's the therapist saying to herself, "I know I'm cheating you, and I'm going to take this extra step so you don't catch me."

If the therapist skipped out of a "cpl minutes" I wouldn't have said anything.

This was 15-20 minutes out of 80. That's not just knocking off a few minutes early.

Massage wasn't free. It was being paid for by Total Rewards (the Caesar's players club), and the spa gets the same $150 as if I had paid in cash. Total Rewards gave it to me as a benefit for my heavy play at Caesar's, which again isn't "free".

The therapist knew she was doing something shady, which is why she turned off the clock so I wouldn't catch it.

My 2 cents: It probably was still in the system as the original 50 minute massage (you got 60 but that's normal for a therapist to go a little over, especially if there is a gap between the next client) and the therapist wasn't informed of the change. The front desk probably moved you to the new slot, but didn't change the length of the massage. Chances are you got the "extra time" (on a 50 minute massage) because the therapist had the extra 30 minutes before her next client.

The clock: could be a number of explanations, from her plugging in a towel warmer or a hot stone crock pot, to the therapist not liking the clock in the room, as I'm assuming they share rooms there, so it could be from another therapist. Of course it could be them trying to screw you too.

The real question is why are you making such a big deal when you were comped a free massage? Do you really think she was "out to get you", and now you want her fired and won't be satisfied until heads roll?

This is probably standard for a massage parlour that caters to tourists, meaning you aint coming back no matter how good a job they do. Even very good massage therapists aren't gonna give you a great massage unless you are a regular, or they think you have potential of becoming a regular.

If possible when doing small talk with a new therapist at the beginning of your massage, try to insinuate you just moved to the area, looking for a good therapist, blah blah blah. Trust me, your massage will be way better this way than it would otherwise. Also, if you actually liked the massage and plan on coming back, leave a good tip. This guarantees the next massage is going to be even better. Of course, once you start tipping good, you cant stop, but I don't mind as I really appreciate a good massage and am willing to pay for it.

Again, the massage isn't free. Read my previous post above for an explanation. These departments within Caesar's operate on separate budgets and the spa actually made a real $150 on my massage.

I never said anyone was "out to get me". That's your assumption. This wasn't personal. She didn't want the 9-10am slot to go to waste, knew that my 90-minute one wouldn't fit in there, and decided to take me anyway and just short me for part of it.

The clock was definitely intentional. The therapist even lied about it to the manager, claiming it was still on when she walked out, and that it read 10:19. I looked at it within a minute of when she walked out, and it wasn't on.

Had it not been for the clock, I would have been forced to consider that this was simply an honest mistake, but that was the clincher. The terrible stories told by the manager (lol daylight savings time) means that I caught them doing something shady and they were trying to tell me something that sounded better than the truth.

    Partially agree with this.

I do think that all spas are shady to some degree, especially tourist-oriented ones, because as you said, there is little repeat business. Also, if most of the clients are spoiled housewives, they aren't going to be counting minutes or paying attention to the bill. I have heard other shady spa stories over the years, and this all points to the fact that they probably get away with it a high percentage of the time.

However, in this case, the spa is associated with a casino where not pissing off the high-stakes gamblers is VERY important.

Brandon told me a story related to him by one of his friends, who works at a Caesar's property. She told him that, on orientation day, they told her the #1 rule was "Don't ever piss off the Seven Stars members!"

Caesar's is very big on this. While they routinely make laughable screw-ups operationally, they are still smart enough to know that pissing off Seven Stars members is horrible for business.

They routinely send out these Rincon spa vouchers to California and Nevada Seven Stars members, so you'd think they would be very careful to NOT let things like this happen, especially when they know a voucher customer is coming through.

Indeed, both the spa manager and hotel manager acted very worried when I talked about possibly reporting this to my host at Caesar's.

Why get a nice relaxing massage if you're just going to twist yourself out of shape right after. Accept the 50 minute comp, enjoy it next time & be done with it.

I go for massages on a regular basis & have never booked more than 1 hour. They can sufficiently give a full body, deep tissue massage, paying extra attention to some trouble spots, in that time. Never understood the whole 90 minute thing.

Also, truth be told, the clock thing is what really sent me over the edge.

Had I just been shorted time, I would have mentioned it at the front, taken the 50-minute voucher for next time, and dropped it.

It was just really dirty to not only short me, but to try to "hide the evidence" so I don't figure it out. And it pissed me off that this sort of thing would be going on in a Caesar's property, where there should be strict rules against this behavior.

If a massage parlor down the street says, "Come in for a free 80 minute massage" and only gives me 60, I say nothing. This is because they aren't making any money, and I shouldn't bite the hand that is feeding me something for free.

However, this is a totally different story. The massage was NOT comped by the spa. It was comped by Total Rewards, based upon my calculated expected loss rate at their properties over the past year. The spa itself gets paid fully as if I had walked in with cash.

I am never going to be a hard-ass and bitch about being shorted by a few minutes, but this was an egregious shorting, and the cover-up really got me angry.

BTW I got 90 minutes both because my voucher paid for it and because I needed it anyway. I developed back problems for the first time in my life in 2013, and they hit their worst point a week ago.

you're not reading it right, after you complained they COMPED you another massage. I'm not talking about the first one. Whether you want her fired or not, that is what calling someone a cheat and a liar to their boss signifies; how can you not understand this? And did you really just say "that's your assumption" to me? The guy who writes this:

So as her manager you didn't bother to ask her why she intentionally quit my massage early and cheated me out of time
    or this:

No, I know what happened. The therapist overbooked and had an appointment at 10:30, so she needed to cut some time off my appointment so she could take a break and prep the room for the next person. And she turned off the clock before walking out, hoping I wouldn't notice that I got cheated.
    or this:

You really have no clue how real-life works, and how employee/manager relations are. When a therapist gets screwed because the front desk fucked up the booking the manager isn't going to throw her or the front desk, under the bus, she is simply using one of a dozen cookie cutter excuses they have committed to memory. Regardless of what happened, another massage more than makes up for your inconvenience, but yet you still push it to find out what "really" happened. Guess what, you don't work there and are not her boss, so she doesn't owe you anything more than whatever excuse she gave. She obviously explained what happened to her boss and he gave you the same cookie-cutter excuse to protect his employees.

Now, if she didn't make it right (giving you the free massage on your next visit) she would have been chewed out, as it is they probalby talked about oyu for 20 minutes, had a laugh, and moved on with their day.

Is it possible the therapist was getting sick from looking at and touching your hairy back and spare tire and just had to escape?

She obviously explained what happened to her boss and he gave you the same cookie-cutter excuse to protect his employees.

Now, if she didn't make it right (giving you the free massage on your next visit) she would have been chewed out, as it is they probalby talked about oyu for 20 minutes, had a laugh, and moved on with their day.
There goes your condescending, nasty attitude again.

I worked in "real life" jobs for over 10 years prior to quitting in 2003. How much experience do you have in employee/manager relations?

It is up to me to find out what "really" happened because I had an 80-minute massage booked and got shorted for nearly 25% of it. And they intentionally turned off the clock to hide it from me.

So yes, what "really" happened actually IS my business, because it directly involved me, and because I didn't get what was promised and what they received my Total Rewards dollars for.

The "next visit" thing wasn't worth much to me because the place is way out of the way, and I won't be returning for several months, if not years.

The manager does "owe" me an explanation, because she knows I can (and probably will) take it over her head if I am not satisfied with what I hear. When you work a corporate job, you need to follow the corporation's rules and adhere to their standards of customer service. This is obviously not something Caesar's would want happening to their casino players, especially their Seven Stars members. This is why they were noticeably worried when I talked about going to my Vegas host about the matter.

I pray that your freelance poker and affiliate jobs are successful enough to support your family, because if you are ever appointed to management in any corporation, you won't last very long.

Are you 2 really getting all worked up & starting an e-feud over something that's supposed to help relax you like a massage?

Please tell me you are just trolling Druff and arent really this stupid. I remember when Corrigan first said u were awful and I thought he was being an over critical dickhead, but since then I cant agree with the guy more. Even worse is that most of ur posts drip with self importance & the belief u know what u are talking about.

Are you a regular with the therapists you go to? I find the quality of the massage goes way up when I do 90 minute massages as opposed to 60. I am sure I "could" get just as good a massage going for 60 minutes, and I admit there is some unnecessary redundancy to fill up the extra time, but IMO the girl is going to put more into it if it is 90, cause she is making that much more money.

When dealing with therapists, you pretty much have to view it like you are a john and they are a prostitute. pretty much all they care about is how much $$ you are paying them, and the more the better for them, and the better your experience is gonna be, especially if you are a regular.

Also, do not flatter yourself that if you are good looking, don't have a lot of fat or body hair, are in good shape, have a big penis, etc. etc. etc. they really give a shit. As long as you don't smell bad, they will take a short, fat hairy guy who tips well over a Brad Pitt clone who doesn't tip any day of the week. Most of those chicks have been looking at backne, ass hair, and ball sack for so long it, nothing really phases them any more. It is all about the green.

I don't get where you think those first 10 minutes are yours.
Its an 80 min massage they have a 10:30 appt, too.
You get there at 9, you get 80 minutes get out of there at 10:20 so they can clean for 10 minutes.

She should have went until 10:20 for sure, but you were 13 minutes late.
And I see the mgr said you were right, but she was flustered at that point.

I see you getting an entirely new 50 minute massage, for at most a 12 minute mistake.

I didn't make this up. It's their own rules.

My $150 paid for a 90-minute block from 9-10:30am, of which 80 minutes can be actual massage time.

    It's even called a 90-minute massage.

It was confirmed both before and after the massage that it works this way.

The "prep time" for the next customer comes out of the spa's time, not mine.

The only thing I can't do is show up at 9:00am and expect 90 minutes of massage time, even though it's technically called a 90-minute massage. You get 80 minutes, but 90 starting from your appointment time to get that 80 completed.

customer service generally is terrible at rincon. so it's not surprising that your massage experience was lacking. next time stay at pala. waaay nicer and also closer to san diego proper. customer service is top top there, and it's hella easy to get free rooms.
