Riviera Casino in Las Vegas may be gone soon

    https://www.reviewjournal.com/busine...out-be-history

    It's 60 years old.

I stayed there sometimes in the '90s.

One time I noticed it had a secret floor that you could only reach via the staircase. It was like floor 14 or something. It didn't have a floor number. Probably used by the mob in the old days. Nowadays it's probably offices or something.

Anyway, it became increasingly irrelevant as time passed, especially as the action moved to center strip.

In the '80s, its location was considered decent because it was close to the Hilton and Circus Circus, whereas center strip wasn't really a big deal at that point.

For a long time they had a way you could mini-bonus-whore there, by getting a free book of freeplays at all of the games. They were like $5 freepays each, but you could go from game to game and get $5 freeplay each.

Also, there were no players cards then, so you could do this every time you came there. I'm not sure if you were supposed to, but they never enforced it. I'm pretty sure that's gone now.

I was very sad when I read this the other day.

I was hopping that it would be sold to new owners who would inject some cash into the place and give it some much needed TLC.

I crave a place that is "old Vegas" but isn't a shit hole. I think the public at large would embrace such a place as well.

I don't know how much this contributes but my uncle and his friend use to go to casinos all the time..I would occasionally tag along..this was before I had an appreciation for poker..they would generally play slots all day get a couple of beers but dinner then go home..they all started complaining that the slots which back then gave you your monies worth of entertainment was getting too expensive..that's when they started coming out with slotted with 10,15,20,35 lines and when you would hot something, it was for less then you put in..just on my uncle and friends they lost thousands a year in repeat business..not including other stuff they spent money on..YOU HAVE TO CATER TO THE REC, NOT THE "pro?" The casinos got big on quarters..they got greedy and forget..good luck catering to the whales..in the future casinos should be smaller boutique type operations..but they still have to be careful..if it's a poker room with only pros would enough show up..if it's a poker room with REC,s enjoying themselves should let pro,s "bum hunt" and Chase the recs away.

This was where the casino scenes in the movie Casino were filmed. Great movie, Lester Diamond was god.

Also, I heard they had a 1000x odds craps game. For those that don't know craps, that means you can bet $5005 on somebody's roll, and the house edge is about $0.07. Not sure if they still have that degen game.

I was there once because some friends got a room there, because it was the cheapest hotel on the strip. I was unimpressed. Tony Bigcharles will miss the place though, its one of the few strip casinos what poker that he isn't 86'd from.

It's not ONLY the competition but they got too greedy and aggressive..I went to Yonkers race track when they installed slots .I know slots are a losing game..but for the entertainment value and to get out of the house(I'm not Jewish) ..we blew 300 in an hour bought 2 watered down drinks for 18 bucks..it's ridiculous...never went back again..and the humongous room full of slots we didn't see one happy person actually hit anything..fyi Yonkers is advertising all over the place now and blaming the economy...just like UB POKER in a way..this new form of ownership that graduated business school but never worked a real job..the old school guys made sure the paying customers got their money worth and loved to see "winners" couse it kept them coming through the door..

If you're in Vegas right now, you've got 2 hours to take a last look until the Riv shuts its doors forever.

pretty sure the reason there is no 14th floor is due to Chinese tradition or rather Tetraphobia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tetraphobia

Special care may be taken to avoid occurrences or reminders of the number 4 during everyday life, especially during festive holidays, or when a family member is ill. So much so that just mentioning the number 4 around a sick relative is strongly avoided. For instance, you never want to give four of something and there is even a saying that "you don’t do things in fours…". Elevators in Asia and Asian neighborhoods will often be missing the 4th floor or any floor whose number contains the digit "4" (as 14, 24, etc.). Military aircraft and ships will also avoid the number 4 (such as the South Korean and Taiwanese navies) due to its extreme negative connotations with death. April 4th is also considered an exceptionally unlucky day (much like Friday the 13th in the West).

Similarly, 14, 24, 42, etc. are also to be avoided due to the presence of the digit 4 in these numbers. In these countries, these floor numbers are often skipped in buildings, ranging from hotels to offices to apartments, as well as hospitals. Table number 4, 14, 24, 42, etc. are also often left out in wedding dinners or other social gatherings in these countries.
    but, I could be wrong...

John (PokerAddict on 2+2) has been writing a series of articles on the Riviera's final days over at 4Flush, including this piece today:

Gonna miss that place. I remember staying there a ton when my parents brought me to Vegas -- instead of Disneyland -- as a child, lol.
