Game 1 today for the USA playing right now against Mexico.
WTF would start a knuckleballer in your first game? Many of them guys take like a month or so to get into a groove and R.A. Dickey has been roughed up already in his first two spring training outings he has no business being out there right now.

Have you guys seen the US roster though? The WBC is still pretty much a joke. The US team would struggle to make the playoffs in MLB. They have a solid 1-6 in the order (Rollins, Mauer, Jones, Braun, Stanton, Wright) that would own it up in MLB, but no fucking pitchers. Their top 3 starters are Dickey, Gonzalez, Vogelsong. No star pitcher in their right mind wants to play in this thing.
I also find it funny that we have Gio Gonzalez on team USA...he was born in USA of course, so its legit. But you look many other rosters and there are American born MLB players playing for their "ethnic" origins. Surprised that Gio didn't jump ship and try to play for whatever he is.

edit: oops. I guess Gio is Cuban...so yeah he can't just go play with them. My point still stands though. We have a fringe pitching staff of second rate starters and some good relievers, while many other solid American players are playing for other countries, while our stars take a breather.

The problem with WBC is the time of year but with such a long MLB season how do you have it afterward even if it's all in warm weather locations?
You could start the MLB season 1 week earlier and then have an extended All Star Break to run it. That would still create weird situations BUT players who could play would be on top of their game compared to just getting over some off season rust. Some managers would hate this though as it could bring some real rust to everyday players not playing BUT many could just play scrimmage games or for minor league teams which could help boost income in those revenues.
These early games aren't as meaningful as later on ones even though their have been some upsets. I'm a big baseball fan but I agree they need to find ways to improve WBC.
USA did get their shit together in the second game so they got to just finish off Canada in order to advance. If they can't beat a country that puts all their emphasis on hockey then it will be an embarrassment.
