Things that annoy you on facebook.

I admit that I am probably slighlty more asocial than the average person. Not that I don;t like parties (why I made a facebook account in the first place) but I become so annoyed and cynical with online comminication in general. Particularly facebook which I pretty much only use for keeping in touch with people who don;t use IM or email.

BE WARNED THIS IS VERY CYNICAL (i will leave out obv complaints like farmville)
Here are some things I hate.

    1. People who use quotes that aren;t theirs for their status, then take responsibility when told how awesome it is by others. I have multiple people who steal quotes from others twitters and when told how smart they are for ciming up with the quote, instead of fessing up they just tell others "thanks". Whats even worse is that they put multiple quotes a day....

    2. People who posts music videos all the time. This doesn;t make you cool and honestly I don;t care what you are listening to or how deep it is.

    3. Couples or close friends who feel the need to bypass private messages and instead post on eachother's wall dozens of times each day...

    4. Having to decide wehther to wish someone happy birthday. This seriously sucks

    5. Getting spam about someone from highschool that I haven;t seen in 15 years who wants me to go see their band. Ok this is not so bad and sometimes cool, but its fucking annoying when I don;t even live in the city anymore and get these updates every week.

    6. Exes.... please don;t add me if we haven;t spoke in 5 years. And if you do add me please don;t post some cryptic crap about whether you are secretly happy or pissed off to see me.

    7. People posting their amateur photography. please I can only take so many pictures of sunsets, graveyards, fields, and random young/old people. I get it, you got a digital camera.

    8. People who post stupid shit that was debunked on snopes 2 years ago.

    That's all for now....

    Nothing.

I am one of the few that have never created an account. My wife has been telling me she will create one for me for years now. I am just not interested, though recently I have considered doing it just to get the free points and other shit casinos and other businesses offer for "liking" them.

    Im still holding out though.

What pisses me off is when I get 15 requests for some app for some game or birthday calendar

    1. I toss up quotes from time to time and I steal most of them but I never take claim for them. I will take credit for them to fuck with some idiot who thinks I am some ancient philosopher

    2. I'm guilty of this once in a while but again it is my wall so people dont have to suscribe to it, but my shit is deep and everyone should be listening to something like this, if not they need to take more acid or mushrooms

    3. def annoying

    4. Usually people who I know well get the happy birthdays, if they dont make the happy birthday cut then they may get deleted.

    5. I hate this spam VIA pms, and I reported Ray Allens charity for spamming my inbox. However I am guilty of spamming every one of my contacts with fantasydraft.net because they all should be playing there now and if they arent then they should all join and develop gambling problems

I don't have a Facebook. I have a phone, if people want to talk to me, they call it. If I don't have someone's phone number, it's probably for a reason. I don't want hundreds of friend requests from people I'm barely friends with. I also would get extremely annoyed by people who have to post what they are doing every second of the day. I don't really give a fuck if you ate a turkey sandwich for lunch.

App/Game requests are the most annoying thing to me but I have a few girls on my friends list that post like 5 new pictures of their kids every single day. I mean come on I understand your proud of your children and want to share but is their a need to post that many new pictures every single day?

Facebook is just annoying, period. From the quirks/errors of the software, the inadequacies of customization potential, to the constant games, surveys, and other idiotic invitations you receive, it's basically a huge mass of BLAH, and nothing interesting ever happens. I actually preferred MySpace for a number pf reasons, but both are/were ludicrous wastes of time.

Totally with you. I hate Facebook with all my heart. Take what you just said and add the following:

1- They OWN anything you say or upload, forever. Meaning, you and your wife have a nasty divorce and you never want to see her again, nope sorry, Facebook owns the pictures that rip your heart in half and will do with them as Facebook sees fit.

2- You are making data mining very appealing and easy for whomever might want to do so, voluntarily. Yeah you may argue that right now no reasonable person would really care. Ok, with the rate things are going now, do you see our rights increasing or decreasing in the future? Think ahead people...I know it's hard to do but there may be a time when you do NOT want to be found.

3- The gov spies on you and not only that, they employ both human AND interactive (think AI basically) programs which do one thing- pretend to blend in and spy on you. In fact, the Air FOrce admitted as much and the programs think and talk like normal people and take input and data from the area to sound more believable. Culture, time period, purported age etc are taken into account when the program/machine decides how to respond like a normal person would.

BUT MIKE YOU ARE BEING FUCKING PARANOID CHILL THE FUCK OUT.
Ok, maybe I am being paranoid. No worries, paranoia never killed anyone, but all the same let me ask you all this- has anyone here been contacted by someone they used to know but now haven't seen in a long time randomly on Facebook? How about someone from your area that thinks you're cool or whatever, and sounds pretty legit (might be cute guy or girl of course) and just wants to "network"? Perhaps, to make it more plausible that a machine is pretending to know you and be human, this person contacting you in fact lives hundreds or thousands of miles away-meaning you are unlikely to really ever meet them IRL. At the very least verify that you know everyone and have spoken to them on the phone recently at the very least. If you are just randomly communicating on Facebook and never talking to these folks live or seeing them then sadly they aren't that important and hence my belief is vindicated that FACEBOOK IS A HUGE MONUMENTAL WASTE OF TIME. Not to mention there are several security/privacy threats.

4- There is so much fucking malware hitting that site every day it's not even funny. And think, conveniently if some super bug gets on your friends account it now has your email address, your phone number, your personal data etc etc and that of hundreds and thousands more.

BUT MIKE WHAT DOES ALL THIS MEAN??? It means Facebook offers next to nothing you can't do by texting whatever random thought entered your mind and entering multiple people as the recipients can't do yet the cost is massive- potential security threats ALONE should push you away.

Stay the fuck away. My 0.02$

Lest Sonatine accuse me of saying crazy insane things again

Revealed: Air Force ordered software to manage army of fake virtual people

These days, with Facebook and Twitter and social media galore, it can be increasingly hard to tell who your “friends” are.

But after this, Internet users would be well advised to ask another question entirely: Are my “friends” even real people?

In the continuing saga of data security firm HBGary, a new caveat has come to light: not only did they plot to help destroy secrets outlet WikiLeaks and discredit progressive bloggers, they also crafted detailed proposals for software that manages online “personas,” allowing a single human to assume the identities of as many fake people as they’d like.

The revelation was among those contained in the company’s emails, which were dumped onto bittorrent networks after hackers with cyber protest group “Anonymous” broke into their systems.

In another document unearthed by “Anonymous,” one of HBGary’s employees also mentioned gaming geolocation services to make it appear as though selected fake persons were at actual events.

“There are a variety of social media tricks we can use to add a level of realness to all fictitious personas,” it said.

    Government involvement

Eerie as that may be, more perplexing, however, is a federal contract (PDF) from the 6th Contracting Squadron at MacDill Air Force Base, located south of Tampa, Florida, that solicits providers of “persona management software.”

Update: The contract has since been taken off FBO.gov. The link above has been updated.

While there are certainly legitimate applications for such software, such as managing multiple “official” social media accounts from a single input, the more nefarious potential is clear.

Unfortunately, the Air Force’s contract description doesn’t help dispel suspicions. As the text explains, the software would require licenses for 50 users with 10 personas each, for a total of 500. These personas would have to

be “replete with background , history, supporting details, and cyber presences that are technically, culturally and geographacilly consistent.”

It continues, noting the need for secure virtual private networks that randomize the operator’s Internet protocol (IP) address, making it impossible to detect that it’s a single person orchestrating all these posts. Another entry calls for static IP address management for each persona, making it appear as though each fake person was consistently accessing from the same computer each time.

The contract also sought methods to anonymously establish virtual private servers with private hosting firms in specific geographic locations. This would allow that server’s “geosite” to be integrated with their social media profiles, effectively gaming geolocation services.

The Air Force added that the “place of performance” for the contract would be at MacDill Air Force Base, along with Kabul, Afghanistan and Baghdad. The contract was offered on June 22, 2010.

It was not clear exactly what the Air Force was doing with this software, or even if it had been procured.

    Manufacturing consent

Though many questions remain about how the military would apply such technology, the reasonable fear should be perfectly clear. “Persona management software” can be used to manipulate public opinion on key information, such as news reports. An unlimited number of virtual “people” could be marshaled by only a few real individuals, empowering them to create the illusion of consensus.

You could call it a virtual flash mob, or a digital “Brooks Brothers Riot,” so to speak: compelling, but not nearly as spontaneous as it appears.

That’s precisely what got DailyKos blogger Happy Rockefeller in a snit: the potential for military-run armies of fake people manipulating and, in some cases, even manufacturing the appearance of public opinion.

“I don’t know about you, but it matters to me what fellow progressives think,” the blogger wrote. “I consider all views. And if there appears to be a consensus that some reporter isn’t credible, for example, or some candidate for congress in another state can’t be trusted, I won’t base my entire judgment on it, but it carries some weight.

“That’s me. I believe there are many people though who will base their judgment on rumors and mob attacks. And for those people, a fake mob can be really effective.”

It was Rockefeller who was first to highlight the Air Force’s “persona” contract, which was available on a public website.

A call to MacDill Air Force Base, requesting an explanation of the contract and what this software might be used for, was answered by a public affairs officer who promised a call-back. No reply was received at time of this story’s publication.

Other e-mails circulated by HBGary’s CEO illuminate highly personal data about critics of the US Chamber of Commerce, including detailed information about their spouses and children, as well as their locations and professional links. The firm, it was revealed, was just one part of a group called “Team Themis,” tasked by the Chamber to come up with strategies for responding to progressive bloggers and others.

“Team Themis” also included a proposal to use malware hacks against progressive organizations, and the submission of fake documents in an effort to discredit established groups.

HBGary was also behind a plot by Bank of America to destroy WikiLeaks’ technology platform, other emails revealed. The company was humiliated by members of “Anonymous” after CEO Aaron Barr bragged that he’d “infiltrated” the group.

A request for comment emailed to HBGary did not receive a reply.

    Update: HBGary Federal among bidders

A list of interested vendors responding to the Air Force contract for “persona management software” included HBGary subsideary HBGary Federal, further analysis of a government website has revealed.

Other companies that offered their services included Global Business Solutions and Associates LLC, Uk Plus Logistics, Ltd., NevinTelecom, Bunker Communications and Planmatrix LLC.

How am I being paranoid when EVERYTHING I posted is true and validated?

Facebook owns anything you upload, there are shiploads of malware and viruses, the air force is actively employing AI to gather intel and it is a HUGE WASTE OF TIME. Please do point out

#1 How anything I said proves I am paranoid

#2 Why it's wrong to be a bit paranoid

And I have always been highly paranoid, part of the package with BPD apparently but that does not negate the facts here at all.

I will say yes you are correct that you should be cautious while dealing with social media. Forums like these especially. Facebook itself does not distribute malware and viruses but some apps do have viruses imbedded in them.

I'm starting to hate facebook. Twitter is the way to go. But things that annoy me.

    1. Bitches that update their status 5 times a day about their stupid kid. I don't give a fuck about yer gay baby.

    2. People that think they used to have a problem, and now are sober and all they wanna talk about is their sobriety and how great it feels to wake up without a hangover. Again, I don't give a fuck.

    3. This bitch thats really hot and whenever her and her boyfriend have the slightest problem she has to tell facebook exactly what happened. Usually this kinda stuff is funny, but shes really hot, so every time she does it she has 100 horny guys coming in telling her how terrible her boyfriend is. I may kill her if I was her boyfriend.

    4. Same bitch posts 100 mirror pictures of herself every day. Seriously, how lonely are you? And of course said horny guys are all commenting on them about how beautiful she is.

    5. Fat chicks (and guys although its less frequent) that have to update their status every time they go to the gym. Bitch, you've been going to the gym for years and gaining weight every year. Going to the gym, grabbing a soda and chips from the vending machine, and chilling on the couch and watching tv does not count as working out.

My understanding on the malware thing is limited but from what I know hacker/virus writers typically hack into Facebook and embed a trojan or whatever they have and mask it to look like, i don't know, "click here to see your age in 50 years!" or something equally stupid made to get stupid people to click on it. Once you click the malware does the rest. Facebook finds and deletes the malicious code but with millions and millions of daily users just a couple hours could get thousands of victims.

Yes but this can happen anywhere. The most malicious piece of malware you can get is those fake antivirus pop ups. I will be creating a thread about a useful tool that removes these pieces of shit.

Yeah what you are referring to was called Macdefender (with some variants) on Macs. It also looked like a downloader for flash player.

I disagree that it's the worst, TDSS anyone? Encrypted hidden file systems in unreadable sectors sounds like a party? Hmm no thanks.

Hey Bootsy I do need help with something- I can't fucking get rid of these idiotic fake Facebook chat looking porn popups. PLEASE speak on this! There are maybe 5 tube sites I go to that have them and the fucking things annoy me to no end. They even sit there and ridicule you like so- I go to porn tube site, little box on the bottom right hand corner pops up with some girl typing the following "HEY WHY ARE YOU SITTING THERE JACKING OFF? CONTACT ME IM HOT AND I LIVE NEAR (insert city close to your ip here) and then "WHO DO YOU THINK WILL WIN (x whatever sports game, last I remember it was the super bowl) I hate those fucking things with a passion.

You can't get rid of them. I will bring up another annoyance that tilts me more. The automatic pop up of a chat roulette session. Those bitches are so nasty that there have been times that I give up and do something else.
