I lol'd. South Park went from using flash to AE, it's much easier to use and you can put shit together much quicker. I even have a plugin to do lip synch for AE.
This is as far as I got on my old PII machine, it just couldn't handle it. It was going to take me 30 days of straight rendering to get a shit quality 4 minute video. This was just a test render of like 4 of 66 scenes. Shoutout to Lexicon rapping.
False.
I have some experience with AE, but never really thought of it as a tool for this sort of thing. That's a very robust program, and my shitty computer can't handle rendering AE projects anyway. When the show began using computers, the cardboard cutouts were scanned and re-drawn with CorelDRAW, then imported into PowerAnimator, which was used with SGI workstations to animate the characters. The workstations were linked to a 54-processor render farm that could render 10 to 15 shots an hour. Beginning with season five, the animators began using Maya instead of PowerAnimator. The studio now runs a 120-processor render farm that can produce 30 or more shots an hour.
As far as I know, there really aren't any good tools for automating lipsyncing. If you're only using 2 mouth shapes (open and closed), maybe you can automate it that way. But that's going to look shitty, like my Matt Marafioti animation. It would be cool if there is something that can detect which vowel sounds or sibilants are being spoken and inserts the correct shapes. If I'm wrong about this, and such tools exist, please let me know.
Some of the stuff is done in maya for sure, but you haven't seen this yet for sure: http://thepiratebay.se/torrent/67328....HDTV.XviD-FQM
Just look at what they are synching with, it's all AE, and yes the plugin that I have does vowel sounds, I also have a tutorial on how to build a custom rig for mouths that works a charm too. I just haven't had any reason to put it into play yet.
Ah, I stand corrected. I have seen 6 Days to Air, but never noticed that they were lip syncing in AE.
I cut some corners with the lip syncing by using just 4 mouth shapes and copy/pasting frames in some spots, but it's still a major pain in the ass. I'd love to hear more about your plugin and custom rig.
Hm, tough crowd at 2+2.
