Why should I work? I have everything I need! I have worked enough already in my life. If I work I will be taxed to give money to others that have never worked and may never work once they are socialized / trained into dependence. I feel bad for those folks. And I won't make it any worse by encouraging it.

Only 9% of all entitlement spending goes to the unemployed. Most of it goes to old people.

He's Canadian, and while I have not looked up the numbers, I'm guessing that a lot more than 9% of entitlement spending there goes to the unemployed.

He also has a point. Right now the minimum wage and welfare/unemployment benefits are too similar, making it pointless to work if you can only get a low-paying job and are eligible for entitlements.

My idea is to actually force all recipients of unemployment benefits to do some sort of work for the government in order to receive benefits (after perhaps a 2 month or so grace period). I bet that would kick these people into gear a lot faster as far as finding a job goes.

Why? I'd imagine that "working" for the government would be much easier unless you are suggesting hard labor.

I am suggesting unpleasant jobs like manual labor, except in the cases where someone is physically unable, in which case they would be assigned tedious office jobs.

While this wouldn't do as much to dissuade intentional joblessness for minimum-wage type employees (since their working conditions are likely to be as bad), it would at least make these people productive, and it would REALLY encourage higher-paid employees to get off unemployment.

During the recent 99-week unemployment benefits that were granted as a result of the economic downturn, many so-called "professional" employees also intentionally avoided finding work, and still collected a healthy percentage of their prior paychecks.

There is no perfect solution to the unemployment benefit problem.

If you remove the benefit completely, you wreak havoc upon the lives of hardworking people who lose their jobs and have trouble finding a new one.

However, the benefit's existence promotes intentional joblessness and inefficiency of the workforce.

Forcing benefit recipients to do SOMETHING will both increase overall productivity in the country and also encourage people to get back to work.

I think something similar should be done for welfare recipients, except there should be the additional benefit of government-paid child care.

While the child care would cost the government some money, it would also force welfare recipients to be productive, and would be a net gain. The money spent on the child care would also create jobs in that sector, so it wouldn't actually be wasted.

I just hate people receiving money for literally doing nothing, when they are able-bodied and CAN work.

In the US today, under 60% of working aged males are actually working. It used to be around 85%. The US government says the unemployment rate is 8% - lol. 25% of all children were fed from food stamps in 2012. Not 25% of all low income family children, 25% of ALL children. I'd rather forum surf than work for socialists. That's just me. Like I said, I have everything I need and in case anybody wonders - I don't collect a penny from any government and I never collected a penny from my parents either. It is damn easy to make a lifetime of money in less than a lifetime so long as you understand one single four letter word - "save".

Whats even worse is when you are out working (forced overtime) at 7:00pm and one of these people has the gall to complain that their government check is late. I have been paying in to the system since the age of 15 and have never collected a cent and probably never will. What a bunch of bullshit!
