B. Lamar DuWayneaux, spokesman for the NRA, said the organization supports the creation of a nationwide shooting spree day. DuWayneaux claims that giving the mentally unsound a specific day to vent would have many advantages for society. Police, EMTs, firemen, hospitals and crisis coordinators could be prepared. Gun owners would be encouraged to carry their firearms that day while working, shopping, recreating and participating in any other activity out of the house. Quick citizen involvement in the disabling of a spree shooter would prove a well armed society is the best defense against random acts of targeted violence. Cowardly non gun owners could stay at home if they so choose. Providing the potential spree shooter a day to look forward to could assist all of society in detecting changes in peoples attitudes and behaviors prior to the big day. Reporting these changes to an intervention team could prevent the loss of dozens of lives. December 12th was proposed for the nationally recognized day due to the stress experienced by many as a result of Christmas and a new year fast approaching.
