Some traits are extremely likely to transfer to the next generation, such as height. Put two tall parents together, and it's highly unlikely the child will be average or below average height. Intelligence is also fairly constant. Two smart parents will usually produce smart children, though there is some variance here.
However, two attractive parents don't necessarily produce attractive children, and two ugly parents don't always produce ugly children. Have you ever seen a really hot chick, and then you meet her parents and think she must have been adopted? Happens a lot more than you think.
A lot of this has to do with how the combination of the two parents' features work together.
Also, you can just run bad and inherit most of your looks from the less attractive parent.
