    MEN THE MASTER

you cant have a scam alert site without including: Men "The Master" Nguyen

    Daniel Negreanu December 17, 2001

    " Well Dave,
You are actually the first person who thought my comments were out
of line, but that's ok. None of what I know about Men's 'shadiness'
comes from GCA posts. Many past situations where Men has broken the
code of poker ethics, I got from respectable people in the poker world
who will remain nameless. They told me these things in confidence,
and I will never betray that trust. That also includes people in his
camp who have admitted to me what they were forced to do if they
    wanted to play for Men.
If you are looking for first hand knowledge, that I feel comfortable
sharing, this is an absolutely first hand fact. I'm curious as to how
you feel about the following hand, and comments that followed:
In 98', after I won a bracelet and had some money, both Men and I
put Nhut Tran into a limit hold'em event, each putting up half the
money. Down to three tables, Men had a moster stack, while Nhut only
had 4 small bets left. Men raised in 1st position, and everyone
folded to Nhut. Who then re-raised it to three bets. When the bet
came back to Men, he had to call one small bet, as well as one more
small bet to get Nhut all-in...he FOLDED! That alone is a cardinal
sin by any competent player, that should have been punished, but
    wasn't.
That's not all. Men then takes me aside to the corner and says, "I
had to throw the hand away to keep Nhut alive! We have big percent,
so I have to give him chip." So in other words, Men dumped chips to
one of his horses to keep him alive in the tournament, which is
absolute collusion. It was certainly in Men's best interest
financially to have Nhut still alive in the tournament.
There are a million similar stories to this one, but this is the
only one where Men actually admitted to me that he was doing wrong. I
do not feel it is right to share what I've heard, rather what I KNOW.
If others are interested in putting a stop to Men's antics, I hope
they will eventually come forward with what they have seen first hand.
I honestly feel sorry for some of his horses(who will remain
nameless), who are forced to soft-play Men, if they would like to
continue to recieve financial backing or support from him. Some, not
all of his horses are given the following instruction:
    1. Never call him.
    2. Don't raise his blind.
    3. In no limit, when he re-raises you, fold.
    4. In no limit, you are not allowed to move in on him.
Unfortunately, I will not reveal the source who gave me this
information. So, I can understand your skepticism about the validity
of it. I can tell you that I got this same information from more than
one person. Personally, considering Men's character, I believe it.
You can choose to believe what you wish, but I am comfortable with my
decision to come forward with this information.

Yeah, Men is a well-known cheater from back in the day. I believe one of his horses eventually came forward and admitted to the whole chip dumping thing (just as Daniel described).

Somehow the guy has been celebrated as a charming figure of poker, but in reality he's a big scumbag.

I've also personally seen him berate dealers for no reason, and he generally acts obnoxious in LA card rooms, thinking he's a big celebrity and is entitled to do so.

There is a story from Mellisa Hayden about a spotter signaling him opponents cards from the rail from the old RGP archives archive: http://groups.google.com/group/rec.g...2b576ee9?pli=1

what is your take on Russ Georgiev
Well, at the time I thought he was a crackpot who spun stories that were based on truths (like switching the name of some mid-stakes player to Daniel Negreanu or Doyle Brunson). Now I'm not so sure to be honest. When I first got into poker seriously I was as naieve as anyone, but with over a decade in the "poker world" I realize that nothing is impossible. Unfortunately we'll probably never know because I think he died a few years back.

I actually wrote this back in 03 on RGP about Russ (please excuse all of the grammar issues, I write better now):

First lets start by explaining who Russ is. Russ is a self-proclaimed
poker cheat who also posts under the screen name GCA, a large majority
of which are posts on cheating. He also has written some strategy posts
as well as some question posts.

Lets look at his cheating posts first. Some are on how to spot if you
are being cheated or different scams people run. These posts are pretty
informative and receive no criticism unless they contain names. Most of
his cheating posts are blind and wild accusations about famous poker
players and card rooms. I heard from a friend who heard from his sister
who is sleeping with so and so that he is a cheater, is a typical post
from Russ. Here is where he runs into trouble, Russ feels, much like in
the movie the Wizard Of Oz, that there is a little old powerful man
pushing the buttons and pulling the levers of the great and powerful
poker world. And the powers that be refuse to let any of us behind the
    curtain to expose him.

This line of thinking is how individuals place blame for their failures
on others, the white male that blames affirmative action for not being
able to get the job he wants, when the real reason is he got all Ds in
high school and is not qualified. Or a black male that says a white
person got the job they want, when the reason is they have 2 felonies on
their record. (These examples could easily be switched please don't post
any political correct nonsense) or a woman who says her job went to a
male, when the reason she was fired was because she was late 20 days in
    a row.

Russ blames a quote unquote "poker mafia" for his shortcomings. He makes
up for these failures by writing strategy posts that are in appearance
well thought out. Unfortunately none of his ideas are groundbreaking or
unknown to any quality player. He rarely goes into depth to explain the
reasons these theories work. The few times he does his thinking is
    almost always slightly flawed.

Russ also posts very misleading and slightly confusing questions, which
he challenges the powers that be to answer correctly. Most will not even
attempt to answer because of the disingenuous wording, making them
subject to his attacks. Those who do answer the questions are often
right in their thinking and Russ then will claim they have no idea,
because with his wording of the question there could be many answers.

While he claims to be a world-class player, and laughably backs this up
by showing how he can sometimes beat a $30 table on party, much like his
cheating posts he has never REALLY backed this up. Beating a $30 table
on party is not proof of a WCP.

Russ is a classic eccentric, holed up in his house fearing the
assassin's bullet. He uses words like, they and conspiracy all too much.
Like an inmate in prison he has too much time on his hands and lets his
mind wander into strange unusual places. He has taken a real life
problem, cheating in poker, and turned it into a global conspiracy, when
the reality is it is but a small problem, like steroids in baseball.
Russ craves being in the spotlight so he has duped people into believing
he is "in the know" about things they are not privy to. Most of these
weak minded people can often be found in cults as well (that's a scary
thought Russ the cult leader.), wanting to be accepted "I believe you
that there is a poker mafia, will you be my friend?". Rational adults
expect proof, innocent until proven guilty, a bad clich but fitting in
    this circumstance.

Russ will claim in his response to this post how he played in and
scammed the biggest games around, and he knows everyone else does too.
This is much like a drug dealer claiming he only knows scumbags or a
movie star who only knows celebrities; the classic case of you know what
you yourself are. If you happen to be a poker cheat/scammer a lot of
your acquaintances will also happen to be the same.

I sat next to Men in a tourney at The Bike once and noticed 3 things:

    1. Other Asians were constantly coming up to him and kissing his ass.
    2. In general he was a real piece of shit, especially to the dealers and other staff members.
    3. He had a bunch of random long white hairs on his neck and face. So fuckin nasty but it was like a train wreck, I couldn't stop staring at them.

Therewere a couple versions of this story: One had tournament chips in it, the other (which I think is the actual story) was that Men and co. disabled the smoke alarms in the room to cook on a hotplate. If I remember correctly he was playing in the tournament when he was asked to leave over fire code violations in his room
