I just heard yesterday that the "miracle on ice" was made a lot easier by the coach of the Russians who pulled Vladislov Tretiak, the best goalie in the world at the time, at the end of the first period.
It was 2-2 after 1
Coach Tikhonov:
"The biggest mistake of my career was replacing Tretiak with Myshkin," Tikhonov said through an interpreter. "Tretiak always played better after he gave up a goal. The decision was the result of getting caught up in emotions. After Tretiak gave up that rebound and let in that soft goal to Mark Johnson, my blood boiling. It was my worst mistake, my biggest regret."
The irony is what most people don't know, such as myself as of a couple years ago. This was NOT the gold medal game.
On a side note, I hope and pray Hockey goes the way of Wrestling in the Olympics. I fucking hate this stupid sport, It needs to be replaced with rollerskates and weapons.
