Basically, they are going to try to get permission to carry passengers on freight-only tracks, which will allow for a train trip from Fullerton (Orange County) to Las Vegas. It will cost $99 per person per direction. It would include a meal and beverage. The atmosphere of the train will be a party one, and will encourage drinking and be geared toward a youthful crowd.

They are hoping to make this work because the drive from Vegas to southern CA is horrendous (bad traffic) on Sundays.

It would still be relatively slow, since this wouldn't be a high speed rail project. They would be using existing trains and track and renovating cars/stations so it looks high end.

I think this could actually be successful if they don't spend too much money on it. The problem is that people will still fly instead of take the train, especially if the train's schedule isn't flexible (which it won't be, with only one route per day).

It is projected to be operational about a year from now, but I bet it won't be until 2014, if it happens at all.
