As many of you know, this site seems to get unusually slow/sluggish at random times.
I have grappled with this issue for over a month, and it's been very frustrating. I was sure it was a hardware problem, but they weren't believing me.
A few weeks ago, they "investigated' it for me, found that we were experiencing low system memory, blamed it on me, and charged me for the diagnosis! I complained about this because I have noticed the slowness occurring when memory (and CPU usage) were not a problem. Indeed, I found the cause of the memory problem (it was a database error), fixed it, and the slowness still persisted.
Finally a manager at the hosting company took an interest in this ongoing problem, and promised me that it would be more thoroughly investigated. I got this e-mail today:
Still not sure this will resolve things, but obviously it's worth a shot. I'm at a loss for why it's occurring otherwise, because I check the CPU and memory usage numbers when the system is crawling, and they both look fine.In the course of our investigation, we have noticed that your hard drive
is experiencing hardware errors. This may be the cause of your slowdowns.
We recommend that you have your hard drive cloned and replaced; even if
this does not resolve your slowdown issue, it would be prudent to
replace the hard drive before a failure occurs. As this is a hardware
issue, all costs will be assumed by us. Cloning and replacing the hard
drive usually takes between 4 to 6 hours, depending on the volume of
data to be copied.
