TRIP REPORT
So online poker was dead, I had $100 coming from splithis and $150 coming in for a writing thing, so I decided to take thew whole $250 and step into my very first live cardroom. After reviewing maps I saw that I could get relatively close, and maybe there would be other buses to catch from the final stop, or worst case I'd get a cab from the final stop. So I was off to the St John's Poker Room!
The Journey
So the bus finally drops me off. Don't see any bus stops in the area, so my plan is to walk to racetrack road and maybe get a cab from there. To get there I have to begin by walking two miles until I get to a bridge. Normally no problem, but it was mid 90s that day with no shade in sight. But I finally made it to the road that supposedly went in a straight line to the poker room. It took a couple more miles to find a shopping center where I could call a cab from and have an actual physical address they could pick me up from. I guess this area of Florida doesn't have a ton of broke people because there are no buses, and when I finally find the local cab station to call, they say that they are all busy with some concert, but if I want to pay a $15 service fee they could have a different company come over and pick me up, plus the regular charges for the ride. F that!
I needed to make it about 10 more miles by this time and I was exhausted. I'm not an outdoors guy and the sun had given me a beatdown with the miles I had already been walking. I decided I'd hitch hike and give whoever $10 for the ride. There was a pizza delivery place in the shopping center, so I took out a couple of fives and waved at the drivers when they passed by with a thumbs up point to where I'm going hitcher signal. I figured these dude complain about not getting $2-$4 tips, so surely they'd give me a ride down the road they were already traveling anyways. But there were no takers, either they ignored when driving by, or kind of mouthed a "sorry".
There weren't enough pizza delivery guys going back n forth and I think I started getting rejected by the same ones, so I decided to take drastic action. I'd wave the money at normal shoppers driving out and maybe someone would give me a ride since they were going down that way anyways. Because this was a nicer area and I look sort of like a sketchy scumbag (which works well in the hood to get people not to bother you but not so great in suburbia) I decided I'd just look for dudes, so I wouldn't scare women and children into freaking out and calling the police. There's a fine line between hipster/punk stylings and bum, and if you're not paying attention then the heavily bearded, fitted black cap, tight levi 514s, all black chuck wearing urban fashionista can come off looking like a bum with a hat and black shirt. These guys weren't biting either. It got to the point that I pulled out all $250 and started waving that with the thumbs up hitcher signal, this neighborhood was too pussy for me to worry about getting rolled for it, and I thought it would at least attract a conversation where I could make my $10 for ride offer known. But still no takers.
Even though I was exhausted and had about 10 miles to go, I thought I better get a move on and walk the rest of the way. Eventually the sun came down and the road became all trees on the side and no sidewalk. And no lights, I was walking blind on grass and dirt with the occasional car light from either side to give me my bearings. Then it became an overpass with no real sidewalk, and just a little cement up from the road connecting the don't fall over barriers on the side. I walked over and when I saw lights approaching from cars I stepped up on to the cement and clung to the barrier low hoping no one would dui smash me. My legs were killing me at this point but I knew I was close. Finally off in the distance I saw the poker room and got a surge of energy.
Gameplay
So I made my way inside and the place was awesome. Tables everywhere, ice cold ac, talking, chips being shuffled, it was great. I was tired and my legs felt like jello so I went to the bar first and got a couple of ice waters. Then I popped a no doze and was sat at the smallest nl stakes, 2/2. I was wondering if I should buy in for $100 and then have a $100 rebuy if things went bad, or just buy in for the full $200. I decided to buy in for the full $200. The play was similar to 1c 2c fullring online preflop, but even worse postflop. I saw a guy lose a stack multiway with mid pair, saw a weak top pair get stacked. People were making pf raises anywhere from 2.5bb to 7bbs, and everyone seemed to be calling. I folded for awhile and finally picked up KK. Guy utg+1 makes it $5, a couple of callers, I 3bet, he shoves, I'm thinking "nice" and call. Superreg next to me (he seemed to know everyone in the card room and people kept coming up to talk to him) says "AA vs KK huh? Which one you got?". This made me feel slightly uneasy, and I showed KK. The russian guy who 4bet me all in shows AA. No King falls and I immed bust in my first hand of live card room poker after walking three plus hours to get to the place. I go to the smoking area outside.
