iPhone 5 Review - battery drain = total fail for Apple

This is the first time Apple has put out a totally worthless product and frankly, I'm really shocked. They released the iPhone 5 with a serious battery drain problem and they are pretending it's a non issue. If you check the Apple Support Communities threads, you'll find hundreds upon hundreds of posts from frustrated customers with the same issue. Apparently, some of the phones don't have the problem, while others do. We were unlucky enough to get a phone WITH the problem. Phone charged to 100% at 7 AM, used once mid morning to post to Facebook, then turned off till 3 pm - when we turned it on, it was out of juice. Draining while OFF. Completely unacceptable, rendering the phone useless.

Apple is being ridiculous with their response. They pretend they haven't heard about the problem and suggest resetting the phone. It doesn't work. There are dozens of suggestions on the Apple forums as to things you can turn off in settings to produce a slightly reduced drain (LTE, brightness, etc), which is the dumbest thing ever. When you buy what is supposed to be a top of the line smartphone, why should you have to sacrifice anything to get a full day's charge? Lots of reports of people trading in their brand new phones for a replacement iPhone 5 only to have the same issue. When you call in to see what Apple plans to do about this fiasco, they tell you to do the reset, and when you explain that doesn't work, they make you an appointment at a local Apple store in your town. Then they tell you they have no way of knowing if the store they are making you an appointment at even has the capability to swap out the phone (they are on back order) or swap out the battery (only certain stores can swap batteries). So they want you to waste your time driving across town to an Apple store with no guarantee of anything being done about the problem. If you do end up at a store that can't swap the battery by the way, and there isn't one in your area, they want you to put your phone in the mail to them to do a battery exchange, which could take weeks. So you're just supposed to live without your phone while you wait. Outrageous.

So, so disappointed in Apple. Steve Jobs rolling in his grave. They should be ashamed... such a letdown.

I'll be interested to see if this becomes a continual trend. When you've got a market by the balls because of extreme brand-loyalty, you can get away with stuff like this. After all, you know they'll be back for more.

EDIT: To clarify, I don't follow Apple or tech in general very closely. Maybe they've been doing this for some time, or maybe it's an isolated thing. But it seems like a lot of companies these days get cheap and lazy, rush products out, shamelessly upsell, etc. once they've "got you". For example, EA recently shipped a FIFA port that was 98% identical to the previous year's title, but everyone bought it anyway because they're FIFA fans. I'm sure that saved the company a lot of money. It could be +EV for Apple to start phoning it in with such a religious following.

Seems like a good rule of thumb to get these products a few months after release to avoid some bugs instead of going for the preorder or getting them soon after release. Didn't an older model have a death grip issue that wasn't resolved until a little while after initial release?

Did you actually try doing a fresh install?

You probably have a corrupt install of iOS6. I would say 95% of the time this is the problem.

Next, completely drain your battery and then charge back to 100%. (Technically you should repeat this 2 or 3 times in a row.)

Do you have LTE? If not, turn off the radio as it will drain your battery in record time.
If you only have one bar of LTE reception turn it off and use 3G.
Turn off GPS when not using it.
    Never use Bluetooth.

Do you use Skype or Pandora? They are massive battery killers in iOS.

I've had some problems with my iPhone 4 and I am in no hurry to UG to the 5 or to iOS 6. I may switch to some kind of Droid like the Galaxy, but not sure I can move all my music over. (?)

Did the fresh install - battery still draining like mad.

Not going to give up LTE, Bluetooth, Skype, or anything else - why should I have to? It's the Cadillac of phones and I have to keep it in the garage? That's bullshit - either they release a phone that works properly or they should go fuck themselves and lose their customers to the Galaxy market.

They pulled this same shit when a security flaw allowed thousands of itune accounts to be hacked. I was one of them and someone purchased all kinds of crap using my account.

I emailed Apple support and instead of apologizing or offer some kind of compensation they gave this whole " We normally do not issue refunds but we will this one time... blah blah"

If you've got any more tears, I predict a cosmic commiseration over garlic-stuffed olive martinis before Monday.

Who told you that iphones are "top of the line" smartphones? Apple's marketing team? Apple is notorious for shit like this. Macbook chargers, macbook batteries, ipod batteries, the list goes on and on. Not sure why people are surprised by an Apple product being an overhyped piece of shit. They spent so much time touting all of it's bells and whistles that they forgot the most important thing; Making sure the thing has enough power to even fucking stay on for more than an hour.

Really have to admire Apple. They have actually convinced people that their products are better simply because it has an "I" in front of it. Well played Apple. Well played.

    That's how smart phone work?

I charge my Galaxy once at work, and once a night every day.

I don't give up those things either. I just accept that I am going to get 5-6 hours of battery life when I use them.

I just keep my phone connected to Wi-Fi while at work and home. Then whenever I am out and about and need to use my phone I turn on my 4G. That has helped quite a bit.
