    Negreanu new podcast

His new podcast is basically him and Amanda talking about how she is bipolar.

Apparently she would self medicate with coke and lots of random sex when she lived in LA.

Sounds pretty terrible, the mental illness and the podcast both.

I actually enjoyed the first episode.

It actually took a lot of guts for her to get on there and reveal all of those personal details. I have known about her bipolar disorder for a long time, because a "friend" of Daniel's shot his mouth off to me 5 years ago. I remember being shocked that this person would tell me Daniel's personal business like this, as we were just having a casual conversation, and I didn't even ask about Daniel. I was nice and kept my mouth shut. But most of the stuff I was told, she revealed in episode #1 anyway.

The podcast has gotten a very good reaction from the poker community. People like how they are being real and vulnerable. Daniel is a poker celebrity, and people have always been curious about his life, and by extension, his marriage. Now they're putting out lots of intimate details of their past and present, for anyone who wants to listen.

It has a shitload of views, and almost all of the YouTube comments are positive.

There are people that suffer mental illness. But bi-polar disorder is, in my opinion is a disease invented the last 50 years. Generally speaking it derives from life failure, usually career failures, drugs and alcohol, and relationship failures. I personally believe its a manufactured issue. It's not to say mental issues such as depression are not real, they certainly exist. But bi-polar disorder is just trend. I have a cousin who classifies herself as bi-polar. She got involved in drugs, sex and partying at age 14 and has never had a steady job, three kids with three different dudes. Always a life loser, right up until her parents died and willed her about $3M. Now she travels all the time in her mid 40s and is amazingly doing so much better, posting pictures from Hawaii. I am like you are full of shit, you just no longer have money issues and don't have to work. When she burns through the $3M her bi-polar will suddenly resurface.

    Bipolar is real.

Like with all psychological ailments, there are are those who exaggerate or fake their conditions, in order to excuse bad behavior.

    I believe Amanda's is legit.

How do you know if bi-polar is real? It's a trendy "disease" that did not exist until the 70s and gained great popularity in the 90s when insurance companies embraced it for short and long term disability payments. The common theme of bi-polar is drugs, alcohol, and career and life failures. Now, someone who believes in bi-polar will say the bi-polar caused these issues. There are plenty that say its reversed, the "bi-polar" appears after these systemic issues get rooted. I believe there is clinical depression, I mean when a 19 year hangs themself there is obviously a chemical imbalance in the brain. I am not being insensitive, I have battled alcohol in the past, and I don't blame it on some disease, it's just lack of willpower and enjoying a buzz. Now we are giving fat people a pass and paying for injections to stop eating 7 slices of pizza instead of two slices. Somehow eating too much junk food is now a brain disorder. As far as Amanda, obviously I don't know her but when she said she was doing a lot of coke at the height of her bi-polar, give me a fucking break. She did the coke because she liked to party. Just sick of all these new ailments, trust me if insurance did not cover them, most would cease to exist.

I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to it yet but glad they are doing it. I unfortunately have bi-polar and it sucks. It’s very hard to keep interpersonal relationships because of the depressive cycles when you don’t want to talk to anyone. Some people don’t get it and take it personally if you don’t show up for something because you are in one of those cycles.

So I applaud both of them for doing this podcast. I won’t say by watching his WSOP vlogs I knew for sure she had it. But depression is always worse in the mornings and I would have a sleep schedule very close to hers. Where I would go to sleep 4 or 5 AM and sleep to noon or 1.

Anyways I won’t get more personal about me but I am glad they are doing it.

It’s real bro. I was a super happy kid. Loved going to school. Loved to socialize. Then I was abused real bad during my pubescent years. My entire body chemistry changed. I would get melancholy for no reason. I would have depressive cycles for a week or two where I didn’t want to go to school to talk to anyone. You can have your opinion. But it’s fucking real. It changed the trajectory of my life. Fucked me up chemically when I was developing. I fought through the cycles my entire life. I don’t talk about it much or make excuses about it. But it’s real and it sucks.

Are there people that are misdiagnosed and just depressed in the normal fashion ? Fuck yes. Of course. Skeptics will never be won over because you can’t put yourself in someone else’s brain. My Old Man drank a case of beer a day for 45 years and still won’t admit he’s an alcoholic. So of course he never believed in “Bi-Polar”. He doesn’t believe in any mental illness. His dated a woman with three children. One of the girls was a cutter. She came to the beach one day and there were razor blade cuts all over her inner thighs. The woman he was dating said my Dad told the girl to “toughen up”. Mental illnesses are real. I don’t think she cut herself like that for attention.

borderline personality disorder has many of the same symptoms.

certainly no expert, though i've always heard mental disorders didn't exist until we started living in cities. i realize that can also coincide with modern times, study, and record-keeping, etc.

bigger picture, most of the mental issues we have now including depression are things brought on by having so much wealth and more importantly, free-time compared to any time in history. we used to all be dirt poor, have to work from sun up to sun down, go to sleep from exhaustion, rinse and repeat until we died early. rice farmers in cambodia or strawberry pickers in mexico aren't sitting around talking about these things - they are worried about the basics - which is how we existed until very, very recently.

Right Druff. There’s also the other side of the coin where many of us try not to talk about it at all. To feel normal and/or to not want to be judged or looked at different. People tend to be puzzled with me because I can be a pretty good conversationalist and fun to be around, even when I may be struggling a bit. But if I’m in a full depressive cycle it is almost impossible to go out and act normal.

Just a point of reference. I finished 7th in my class in High School and most students who had as many absences as I did are typically on the bottom of the class. I was also voted most likely to succeed. So I wasn’t diagnosed until many years later. I was good at hiding what I was going through.

Anyways Happy Thanksgiving everyone. This stuff obviously hits close to home for me. But I repect everyone’s opinion. Psychiatry is an extremely inexact science. Why in civil/criminal cases they can find experts who are basically 180 degrees apart from eachother with their diagnosis.

I will just say why the abuse was never caught even though it happened for a few years regularly. I have looked this up and haven’t found similar cases. The person was an adult and would put their entire body weight on me. Would use one had to cover my mouth and the other hold my nose. Would cut off air to me until I turned purple and/or temporarily lost consciousness. They were then nice enough for me to get a some air so I wouldn’t die and then would repeat the process. This method left no marks or bruises. Haven’t found a case like it.

I think the routine lack of oxygen getting to my brain was probably what caused my body chemistry to change and the subsequent bipolar to manifest but I’ll never no for sure. I don’t think it was the trauma. I think it was just what the abuse did to my body’s development.

Yes obv it's real. My MIL raw dogs bipolar 2 and BPD, which has lovely trickle down effects. Every visit is a roll of the dice.

I feel for those with legir ADHD, that's the one I'm often skeptical of.

I do agree about modern conveniences creating many of these so called illnesses. The recent examples of the last 20 years are a creature of social media. Yeah, you spend all day obsessing online, backed up with non-stop video games, some people are going to have mental issues, but its always almost created by terrible lifestyle choices. The plethora of gender dysphoria, which rarely ever existed has become mainstream now, in some circles its almost celebrated. It is rare to find anyone successful to suffer from these new mental disorders. This excludes clinical depression, I knew a guy happily married with two kids, wound up hanging himself in his garage, but he voluntary went off his meds for some reason. But most of these new mental illnesses are a derivative of drugs, alcohol abuse, life failures and social media addiction.

Your case is more of an anxiety disorder from being choked out, the oxygen deprivation obviously reset something in your brain. That is justifiable to have a mental disorder based on that type of physical abuse. I am speaking more of the trend line, where millions now claim a mental illness that is based upon drugs or being online 24/7. I know of a couple people that are on PTSD disability that never saw active combat, but were in Iraq behind enemy lines and knew someone that was killed in combat and now have PTSD and get a check every month. Somehow knowing someone killed in combat qualifies for PTSD. I actually have a relative who served in Vietnam, he never showed one symptom of PTSD for years, but when the illness went mainstream he claimed he was having nightly hallucinations after the fact, and applied for treatment 20 years ago and now has been getting monthly checks. His PTSD has not prevented him from buying an RV and traveling the country. As far as Daniel's wife, I don't know her but I will speak in generic terms, when you are doing coke and you sleep with poker guys to get by and have no job, you are eventually going to develop self esteem issues. It's not bi-polar, its just being a drug addicted, lazy, and broke. When you have money you are fine, it's just when you get down on your money you get these mood swings, welcome to life.

Bipolar is real as fuck. What they might have called it has changed.

Bipolar is somewhat minor or serious and ones lifestyle plays into it. Like a generally agreeable person with bipolar is easier to manage, one without bad habits, etc.

But I’m telling you the scariest 48 hours of my life wasn’t cancer. It wasn’t prepping for surgery when the result could be I’m a goner when I got out of surgery at 30. It wasn’t any of the ghetto situations I found myself in back during the party days. It wasn’t getting carjacked twice in my town in 89 and 90. It wasn’t owing money to a traight up killers. Like I always felt I could deal with that shit.

The scariest 48 hours I ever spent was with a 100lb girl with a full blown manic episode. And it came out of nowhere. Like it wasn’t after some drug bender or any type of shit that you’d assume would bring one on.

Everyone has dealt with minor manic episodes from someone. The fast talking and strange energy of a minor manic episode. But in my over 50 years I’ve only dealt with one full blown manic episode with someone close to me and it’s stuck with me like it was yesterday.

I mean if you don’t give a fuck about the person having it, you wouldn’t be traumatized by it. You’d think wtf? You might get laid out if and wonder why some random chick was all over you out of the blue.

But if you care for the person having one, and don’t want to see them end up in the worst situations imaginable, you’re in for a hellish experience. If it’s a full blown manic episode it’s like if your six year old is running around with a fully automatic weapon in one hand and a knife in the other for two days straight while you try to prevent something bad from happening.

People in a full blown manic episode don’t know they’re in a manic episode, so there isn’t any reasoning with them. I didn’t sleep for 48 hours because if I did, like anything was on the table. Someone you trust could take your car and run over school kids. You can’t drug them out if it. I thought I could. I had a full benzo script back then and they were impervious to it. Like an amount that they give an alcoholic having seizures from withdrawal wasn’t enough. I tried and it made everything worse. It limited all my options going forward. You have never seen one so you have no idea at first how bad this shit is and his and it can get.

Insisting they needed to drive and you can physically take their keys and have to deal with the cops and then you just gave a girl 6mgs of Ativan or follow and watch them just zig zagging 20 mphs down a residential street sideswiping parked cars at 5AM and no one is around to witness it and now you’re afraid to call the cops because you pumped them full of benzos trying to knock them out and they’re going to get a DUI and it’s your ass for giving it to them.

Insisting they needed to go to the store multiple times for random things and then pushing a cart and just running into strangers carts unaware while you’re apologizing and trying to explain to them what’s up all the while the person is already in the next aisle doing something fucking odd.

Someone you can normally just tell what to do and they trust you just getting paranoid and arguing with you for days when you tell them they need to lay the fuck down. Fucking beyond exhausting and frightening to witness.

Literally sitting there and sizing up this little chick and wondering how hard you could hit them and knock them out without breaking their jaw or killing them; not because you’re angry, but for their own good. Thinking where can I find some type of IV med that I can shoot this person up with? Am I going to catch a kidnapping charge if I physically restrain this chick before she comes out of it and tells them I’m cool and wasn’t doing it in some violent way. Absent family members who are unreachable that can involuntarily commit them. You can do it, but the cops and doctors petrified of reprisals telling you how much trouble you can get in if you commit someone involuntarily because sometimes domestic fights turn into a person lying and saying someone is a threat to themselves or others and getting sued for everything after the fact. All of this exacerbated by the fact you literally tried to knock this chick out with your Ativan script early on for her own good but that’s serious legal shit for you. 48 hours of that shit. Truly nuts. Might be the worst two days of my life.

Like in the 1500s, they’d have drilled a hole in their head to let the evil spirits out or burnt them at the stake assuming they were possessed. A full blown manic episode is that fucking off the chain.

bi-polar is very real, if you have not known and lived with a bipolar person I can see it being hard to believe. My uncle was severly bi-polar and would have months of mania where he was gambling and fucking hookers and months of depression where he didnt leave his bedroom. He was a quite successful diamond dealer, I don't think he suffered loser-adult-syndrome, his polar moods where as extreme as someone using crack or something along those lines.

That is a very odd case. I had some weird shit too that has been hard to find many others with similar histories, its difficult not finding people to understand.

Not sure if you are familiar with genetics and phenotypic plasticity, but all sorts of outside stuff happening influences the expression of our genetics in differing ways, trauma during childhood is incredibly destructive, even things that don't normally fall under legal abuse, I think these are referred to as ACE's (adverse childhood events).

Basically I don't think it was lack of oxygen, i think it was the trauma that mostly impacted your development.
