Hero poker tourny guarantees--How can they make any money??

I've noticed on Hero poker a large number of guaranteed tournaments with huge overlays, with some way under sold. I don't remember any specific details, but a typical example might be a $5k guaranteed, $109 buy in, and thirty players. With so many under sold, it makes me wonder how they can stay in business? If I was a pro playing there, I'd be concerned. (I personally play recreationally, low stakes, and don't really care if I can cash out or not.) Does my observation have any validity??
