    The left has never fully grappled with the wreckage of fifty years of neoliberalism, which has left legions of Americans adrift as local places are hollowed out, rapacious profit seeking cannibalizes the common good, and unchecked new technology separates and isolates us.

    The things that mattered are disappearing. We spend half as much time with friends as a generation ago. Hard work no longer guarantees economic mobility. Institutions (like churches) are delegitimized. Place based identity evaporates as we all become "global citizens."
    This is true, but of course this is a cause, not a solution.



    The left skips past the way people are feeling (alone, impotent, overwhelmed) and straight to uninspiring solutions (more roads! bulk drug purchasing!) that do little to actually upset the status quo of who has power and who doesn't.
    Half correct. Yes, a big problem with the modern left is the vilifying/dismissal of struggling groups (such as the white working class), where these people are told that their problems either aren't real ("The economy's great, guys!!!") or they're privileged/racist/homophobic and need to shut up.

    But the solution doesn't have to do with changing the power structure, whatever the fuck that means. The solution is listening to these people and giving them real, tangible solutions they can feel. Also, don't talk down to them, and don't establsh a victim hierarchy.



    Does racism explain part of the attraction of the right's nativism? Of course. But mass deportation is a (terrible) response to Americans' real sense they are helpless in the face of global forces (like increased migration). The left largely ignores this pain.
    This is where Murphy goes into the weeds, and snaps back into modern lefty bullshit. "Racism" isn't the attraction to the MAGA right. If it were, Trump wouldn't have had record percentages of Hispanic votes, nor would he have done better with black men than any GOP candidate in my lifetime.

    Murphy is correct, though, that many Americans do feel helpless/frustrated with the increased illegal immigration, and that the left ignores this, either denying the problem or accusing those of being racist who bring it up.



    We don't listen enough; we tell people what's good for them.

    And when progressives like Bernie aggressively go after the elites that hold people down, they are shunned as dangerous populists. Why? Maybe because true economic populism is bad for our high-income base.
    It's 100% true that the left loves to lecture. That's what was so funny about the political ads attempting to woo white male voters to Kamala. They weren't telling white men what Kamala could do for them. They were lecturing white male voters that many in their group are terrible, but you can be one of the good white men by voting for Kamala. That message doesn't resonate with white men -- or anyone. You don't lecture citizens into voting for you because it will make them better people. You accept them for who they are, and explain what you can do for them.

    However, Bernie Sanders isn't the solution, either. While Bernie was legitimately screwed out of the nomination in 2020 (this never gets enough press), and somewhat screwed in 2016, his plans are shit, and he basically wants to turn the US into a socialist nation. However, Murphy is correct that the Dems are beholden to many billionaire/corporate donors, as well as major labor unions, and are therefore self-handicapping regarding being actual populists.



    Meanwhile, men tumble into a different kind of identity crisis, as the patriarchy, society's primary organizing paradigm for centuries, rightly crashes. The right pushes an alluring dial back. The left says "get over it". Again, a refusal to listen/offer responsible solutions.
    Say what? Again, Murphy descends into nonsense lefty talking points, this time ranting about the imaginary "patriarchy". He's trying to say that the left has been rightfully fighting this patriarchy, but the right has brought a lot of men to their side by offering to preserve it. He's saying that if the left gives solutions to dismantle the patriarchy while still giving men purpose, dudes will come back. Um... no. Totally out of touch.



    We cannot be afraid of fights - especially with the economic elites who have profited off neoliberalism. The right regularly picks fights with elites - Hollywood, higher ed, etc. Democrats (e.g. the Harris campaign) are tepid in our fights with billionaires and corporations.
    This is correct. The left is in bed with many big corporations, as well as education (higher and lower), big pharma, and many other powerful groups wihch don't always have the people's best interests in mind. Democrats need to show the average working man that they're willing to fight for them, and not just via handouts and higher taxes for rich people.



    Real economic populism should be our tentpole.

    But here's the thing - then you need to let people into the tent who aren't 100% on board with us on every social and cultural issue, or issues like guns or climate.
    Again, correct. However, as you can see by some elements of Murphy's rant, he himself is not yet willing to let go of the modern left's "victim class" ideology. He needs to look in the mirror and start with himself. You can't define society's ills mainly by blaming racism, sexism, homophobia, etc. He is on the right track regarding the left needing to lose their ideological purity, where anyone who doesn't agree on social issues (such as the gender ideology nonsense) is vilified.



    In short, he kinda gets it, but he kinda doesn't.

    The highly-ran Trump ad, which I saw a million times during the World Series (baseball, not poker), had the tagline "Kamala is for they/them, Donald Trump is for you." That resonated because the Democrats really do give swing voters that exact impression. Trump makes a lot of people feel like he's going to fight the system and advocate for the forgotten Americans -- ones of all races. Democrats have been focusing upon fighting for those they deem victims, but nobody else.

    This Murphy fella has no credibility. He is a senator from Connecticut and so too is Richard Blumenthal. Blumenthal is a 1st rate scoundrel and liar. Stolen valor type of POS. Unless Murphy has something to say about the other senator from his own state why would anyone listen to him? Fuck him, fuck Connecticut for electing Blumenthal and fuck Dick Blumenthal straight to hell.

    The democrat party needs to clean itself up and stop electing people who offend the sensibilities of average people. They need to call out the real offenders in their own party who damage them. Murphy had a chance here to point all of this out and instead goes on some ambiguous rant about almost nothing.

    He said nothing about Nancy Pelosi, AOC & the squad, late term abortion, Ukraine spending, etc., etc, etc. His words here have absolutely no chance in moving this lifetime democrat back to the party. He also said nothing of wishing Trump success or of any respect for Trump voters. He's as useless as any of them.

    The Dems lost because they lost the 'worker'. It does not get any more complicated than that. They can get back into power but they need to go back to the Bill Clinton model and Bill Clinton type of candidate. Clinton took down George HW Bush in 1992, he successfully framed him as a condescending elitist, which he became. Ironically, now its the Dems who are the condescending elitists.

    I knew Trump would win when I drove through WI and stopped at a diner right outside of Green Bay. Walked in at noon, and there was a huge Trump banner and red MAGA hats all over the place, 1/3rd the patrons were Mexican men with hard hats on the table. I obviously was not there in the 90s, but I guarantee you it was Clinton country then. That is the base of America. For whatever reason, left Democrats despise rural workers now and make fun of them. Right up until they need their roof repaired, then they are ok people.

    One great thing about this election is all these muther fuckers who spent $250,000 to get an MBA in literature are fucked now, they are stuck with their college loans, no forgiveness. Deal with it. You are not so smart now, are you?

    the lefts failure was a deficit of answers and action.

    we simply dont have solutions to crime, homelessness, and drug addiction that fit within our established political doctrine.

    and because we dont have the dexterity to modify that doctrine without essentially splitting into the center and the far left, a lot of people are temporarily voting red in the hope that trump really does create a police state, and really does deport illegal immigrants, and really does solve inflation (which im not convinced actually exists tbh; i think its just unchecked greed), and really will lock up drug addicts.

    and the evidence of this is the bloom in capital inflow around private prison stocks etc.

    biden being a senile hack crank grossly complicated the issue but even his missteps were nothing in the face of first person lifestyle issues getting demonstrably worse in the 4 years he had to address them.

    the great curse of the american experiment is this; areas which benefit from democrat policies vote red and areas that benefit from republican policies vote blue. so we are forever oscillating between extremes of excuses and finger pointing.

    so yeah either trump is going to somehow tear everything down and people are still going to be able to buy fresh fruit and fill their gas tanks or we are getting nuked and bartering goods and services for potable water for a few generations.

    Now that you mention it I do hope we start locking up the addicts. Isn't it true that in the past a judge could declare a person incorrigible and send them to a poor farm or something?

    The left has been far too accepting of junkies strewn all over the streets and shitting wherever they choose and ruining everything they touch and everywhere they go. I'm sick and tired of the junkies amongst us and hope for once we stop coddling them and force recovery.

    The boost to private prisons is probably a natural reaction to central and south American countries unloading their prisons, junkies and mentally ill into the US. Its fairly natural to assume these people aren't going to become model citizens here.

    I watched MSNBC this morning to witness some copism. They actually were reasonable, probably because the election was a total blowout they had no choice, it no longer was the rural voters clinching their guns, it was actually suburbia now. They posted a poll about embedded racism. I can't remember the exact numbers but white conservatives said by 90% it did not exist. Ok, sound logical. But here is the deal, Hispanics said by 60-40 it did not exist, and black 40-60 said it was no longer a factor.

    Guess what demographic was 90-10 racism is pervasive? Yep, white progressives. When New Jersey goes Dem by only 5%, yeah you got a problem. The one great thing is this shuts up the AOC wing of the party, probably forever.

    I think the most likely run out…..

    2 years out Trump and team goes out and kicks ass and does all the things it said it would.
    - Deportations
    - cut the payroll of the government
    - get rid of dept of Education and makes other departmental changes

    The deportations will cause some heartache and bad press and he will get hammered over it
    People will lose jobs and the economy will take a short term bed shit. The reduction of spending will hurt the economy.

    Like all mid terms after a “mandate” they will be perceived as overstepping and people will vote Dems back to the house and senate.

    The Dems will run 2 years later on the slow down and Vance vs Gavin will come down to how the country rebounds.

    It is very very important for the GOP to hit the ground running. These changes will have some bad short term impact socially and economically. Its a given there will be negative impact to the mid terms. The hope
    Will be that things have turned around before the next presidential election. As such the sooner we take the hit the better off we will be.

So you eat dinner with him at the WH once a month and give him some Space X grants. RFK, I'd advise Trump to stiff him, send him packing. Nobody really knew RFK before this election and he strikes me as someone that would not mind being shunned anyway. He would make a fortune on the TV and Pod circuit saying he was betrayed by Trump, write a book, etc..

Nobody really knew RFK before this election and he strikes me as someone that would not mind being shunned anyway. He was make a fortune on the TV and Pod circuit saying he was betrayed by Trump, write a book, etc..

    It benefits Trump as well. He can order Truth Social to become private given his Presidential status, and then Musk quietly absorbs it in say 2026 for $10B. Everyone says the Musk $47B purchase of Twitter was a terrible investment, now it appears its a bargain. As time goes on, it will be a Trillion dollar company.

    Vanderbilt, Rockefeller, Getty, Buffet, and now Musk, these guys never make mistakes, though sometimes they are early. I'll put Ray Kroc in that category too. He was never a failure as an ice cream mixer salesman at age 52. He just was late in life, but when the opportunity came along he crushed those McDonalds brothers franchise ownership and made it into an empire.
