Hertz charges customer $10,000 for driving too many miles on an unlimited miles rental

A guy rents a Hertz car for a month that allows for unlimited miles. He then goes on to drive 25,000 miles in that month, and the Hertz franchise proceeds to charge the guy $10,000 for "driving too many miles". They also threatens to have him arrested if he doesn't leave. No there wasn't some fine print where the unlimited miles wasn't really unlimited miles. He was allowed to drive "unlimited miles"

25,000 is an insane amount of miles to put on a car in a month. There's a good chance this guy broke Hertz' contract by using it for commercial purposes or letting others drive. But that wasn't alleged by Hertz as their reason for charging an arbitrary $10,000. Their reasoning? There's nothing in the contract that says we can't charge you $10k. I think this customer service interaction would give Druff an aneurysm.
Hertz representative: “You need to leave, sir.”
Customer: “But you’re going to charge this to $10,000 to my credit?”
    Hertz representative: “Yes.”
Customer: “When this literally, that’s not even allowed. I never signed…”
Hertz representative: “You show me where it says I can’t charge it.”
Customer: “Right here, it literally says I won’t get charged anything, it says miles allowed, free miles, it literally says to refer to this if there’s anything extra. I’ve never signed anything saying I can only go 100 miles a day, or anything like that, or that I would have to pay more.”
Hertz representative: “But you also never signed anything saying you were going to be allowed to drive 25,000 miles in a month.”
Customer: “No, unlimited is 100,000 miles.”
Hertz representative: “No it is not.”
Ah, yes, I'm allowed to shoot you, repossess your home, and charge you $1 million. There's nothing in the contract that says I /can't/ do that.

Chaser: Hertz calls the cops on a Puerto Rican because they insist he has to show a passport since he's "not from America". What happens when the cops show up? They take Hertz' side!

Double chaser: Hertz wrongly accused people of not returning rental cars, getting them arrested

Hertz ended up coughing up $168 million to be split among 350 people, due to this mess.

The amazing thing was that Hertz was aware this was happening, but took no action to correct it. They basically said, "Oops, well we showed it as stolen, so deal with it."

Here are my Jew tips regarding making things difficult for rental car companies to fuck you:

    - If possible, always return the car with a human being, and demand they go through the car and check for damage/gas level with you, then ask for a printout or email showing you're being charged the agreed upon rate. Resist the temptation to do a quick return where you just leave the keys in the car and walk away.

    - Don't get the CDW or LDW. The rate is really awful, and you will lose in the long run. The only exception is if you are taking a short rental in a place where damage is likely or semi-likely to occur. Research beforehand which of your credit cards cover the CDW for free, and which one has the best benefit (some will only pay after you've filed a claim with your insurance).

    - In the event where they claim they're going to charge you something on the spot, and you don't agree, ask them to hold on while you call your wife/husband to discuss this with them (say this even if you are unmarried). Then walk away, quickly call your credit card company, report your credit card (the one they have on file) lost, and tell the CC company not to put through ANY charges against the old card.

    - Do not ever pay for an upgrade when your reserved car is unavailable, and they only have something more expensive. Also do not take a downgrade at the prevailing rate (meaning don't let them just downgrade you and charge the difference in price). Demand they give you the upgrade for free, provided you want that upgrade.

    - If renting from an airport, they will often send you to an aisle to pick out a car and then don't do any pre-rental damage inspection with you. The lazy guy at the booth will just wave you through. Don't allow this. Do your own examination, and demand they note down any damage you see more than small scratches.

    - Do not accept a car with obvious mechanical issues or bad looking tires. Demand a car in good working order, and with a current registration tag.

    - Do not allow them to treat you like a burden when they're out of cars. One time I was renting from a small location on a rainy day, and they only had pickup trucks left, even though I reserved a normal sedan. This was unacceptable, as I had luggage which would get wet. They told me tough luck, this is all they have, take it or leave it. I convinced them to drive me to their other location about 5 miles away. However, at the other location, I was treated like a second class citizen, and told I would have to wait 2 hours because I'm "not one of their customers". I refused and threatened to sue them and "launch a major corporate complaint" for not honoring my place in line, from the time when I showed up at the first place. They backed down and gave me my reserved car category immediately.

    - Do not rent with low-end companies such as Budget or Dollar. You will get zero customer service, and will get fucked royally if anything goes wrong.

    - If your car breaks down during your trip, through no fault of your own, do not ever spend your own money to rectify it, unless they agree to reimburse you. Furthermore, ask for money BACK off your rental, for all the hassle. They will almost always give it.

    - Do not ever self-report damage you did, unless it's super obvious. They will typically NOT fix minor damage to the vehicle, but will reap the benefits by charging you or your insurance full price to fix it (which is legal, btw). Let them notice the damage, and come to you. Often they will miss it, especially at busy locations.

Disagree 100% on Budget. I rented with them for years because it was a mile from where I lived. The franchise owner would pick me up at my then townhome for my rental (or his GF) and drop me off when I returned. One night I took them out to dinner as a show of appreciation, and I asked him about being an "owner". He said it was the worst decision he ever made. He was called an "owner operator", really he was just a manager. He owned nothing, but he himself was owned because he signed a 5 year contract with Budget and it is was unbreakable unless he could prove a medical condition. He and his girlfriend worked 7 days a week, and they hated their life. In order to cut costs they cleaned the cars themselves. They pulled in combined $70,000. Half the cars would come back with less then a full tank so they would have to go to the gas station after they closed to fill them up. As a side bonus, when their fleet got depleted due to drop offs at other locations, they would have to drive to the airport and pick cars up one at a time. It's a miserable business, try not to sound judgemental about customer service, not everyone luckboxed themselves in poker, most people grind it and have bad days, hard work and little pay.

In 1988, I rented a Volkswagen Jetta from Hertz in Durban, South Africa. I didn’t even have an International Driver’s License. I just showed the guy my passport and my CA DL, and he rented it to me! Such was white privilege under apartheid. So I’m off, never haven driven on the left side of the road and with a steering wheel on the right side of the car. I took that thing all over the dirt roads of Zululand, Swaziland, and the Transvaal, and absolutely trashed it.

I was really worried when I returned the car at the Johannesburg train station, because the window was cracked, I had a flat and the spare was mounted, the ashtray was broken, smelled of cigarettes, and was absolutely filthy. I parked the car, went inside, handed the keys and the paperwork to the clerk. He said thanks, and that was it. No inspection of the car. Didn’t even ask if the tank was full. I never heard anything from the rental company after that.

You think your white guilt was bad in 1988, wait until 2025, you literally might hang yourself. At least do the right thing, break your policy and stake Tyde to a WSOP tourney before jumping in the Hoover dam.

It’s off the Hoover Dam moron. Here is a proper use of “in”: Tgal stuck his tiny penis in Jewdonk’s butthole.

    Owned again:

In September 2017, Aaron Hughes, a 28-year-old man from North Wales, jumped into the Hoover Dam's reservoir and swam across from the Arizona side to the Nevada side. Hughes was visiting Las Vegas for a bachelor party and was reportedly intoxicated. He is believed to be the only person to have successfully swum across the dam without being killed by the turbines. Hughes was fined $330 for the incident.

lol. You can’t jump into a dam either. FYI, dams are made of solid material.

You know what I can't wait for? January 20th 2025 when Trump raises that hand with the other hand on the Trump issued bible, becoming the next President of the United States. He is going to end both wars his first year, and be celebrated like Churchill. That sucks for you, doesn't it?

I also wonder what this guy's angle was- 800+ miles per day for a month. One theory I saw was some kind of high value delivery service, like a turbine part or a kidney that has to be X miles away in Y hours or the company loses a billion dollars.

    Or a treadmill for cars.

They only exist at airports, though. So National doesn't always work.

You can get free Executive Elite Club (their highest status) if you're Caesars Diamond or higher: https://vegascasinotalk.com/forum/sh...euctive-status

Well my portfolio is up 10% in the last week, so that doesn’t suck.
