In 1983 there was a test of the overflow tubes at Boulder Dam. The Lake was allowed to rise until overflow was possible. Hopefully we will live long enought to see it back to "normal" again.

I wonder if this was also related to the unusually wet 1982-83 winter. I didn't pay attention at the time regarding how Nevada and the Rockies were affected.
In all of California it was an unusually wet year, with a few major storms which caused damage.
In fact, the pier seen on "The Rockford Files", which had been cancelled by then, was destroyed by a storm during that winter.
