Miguel Cabrera wins Triple Crown, first in 45 years

An incredible feat by Miguel Cabrera even though the sabermetrics movement has made this award somewhat obsolete.

Pretty amazing that it's been 45 years since Carl Yastrzemski took it down.

Nap Lajoie, Ty Cobb, Rogers Hornsby, Lou Gehrig, Mickey Mantle and Frank Robinson to name a few.

The AL MVP race is really interesting. I always lean toward the guy in the playoffs (Cabrera) but Mike Trout's season has been simply remarkable.

This article makes a pretty concrete case for Trout:

    http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/...b-awards-field

I was leaning Cabrera but have flip-flopped (in under 45 minutes!)

When the advanced stats are laid out for you it seems pointless to argue them..

Cabrera had the superior offensive season. Trout had the superior defensive season. Tigers are in the playoffs. Angels aren't. Take away Cabrera and the Tigers miss the playoffs. Take away Trout and the Angels season still ends without the playoffs. Miguel Cabrera- MVP

Here is what I HATE that I heard 3 or 4 guys say today. "Well he had a historical season winning the triple crown" so we have to vote for him"

So if Josh Hamilton his 2 home runs today and he didn't win the triple crown would these guys consider Trout?

Also this getting to the postseason crap is ridiculous as well. Some teams play in shitty divisions. Trout impacted his team more in terms of wins loss as his team was 6-14 when he was called up and they nearly made the playoffs.

Trout is a superior fielder although this time of year you never hear about fielding in the MVP voting. Trout scored 20 more runs in 20 less games played, Trout stole 50 bases

Cabrera hit 14 more HR, Drove in 56 RBI

Everything else is very similar. Very close. I give Cabrera the nod. Had trout played the full 162 games I would give him stronger consideration

To try and suggest the player having most remarkable feat in baseball not winning the MVP is a little silly. Trout had an incredible year but I'd be shocked if this is not unanimous. This is a classic case of someone writing a story just so it will get read. I read it so it worked.

I think Cabrera will win but find myself more in the Trout camp.

Again, if you really understand sabermetrics I don't see what else matters, Trout wins.

    trout for mvp? riggght

wasn't the media barking about how cabbie couldn't be mvp if the tigers don't make the playoffs? I guess everyone forgets about that when the tigers take the central and cabbie also wins the fucking triple crown. the script completely flipped and somehow it's still trout for mvp. fucking laughable.

No. because even if did end up losing the HR title, Cabrera's stats were still MVP caliber. You make it sound like, if he didn't win the Triple Crown, He would be worthless. He didn't need to win the Triple Crown to win the MVP. It was just an extra bonus. Miguel Cabrera isn't the MVP because he won the triple crown. He's the MVP because he is the best player in baseball right now. The triple crown is just icing on the cake.

God damn I love this man, no homo

It's not just that he won the triple crown, it's that he won the triple crown after a 45 year fucking drought. Real talk though, I completely respect the work of Trout. Thing is Miggy isn't the kind of guy to gloat or celebrate this on national TV. He just goes in does his thing and rolls out, he was actually pissed they pulled him tonight. Dude plays through injuries and still produces, he played 161 games this year and I know he wasn't healthy the whole way through. For me that's added points, the guy just loves to play ball almost to a fucking fault.

Just because the guy can't be paraded around ESPN and the likes because of his accent people want to give away what is so fucking clearly his, you telling me if Josh Hamilton won the triple crown there would be even a fucking GLIMMER of doubt of the MVP?

    Get serious

Trout is like the biggest lock for Rookie of the Year in history but LOL at him winning MVP.

Cabrera has paid his dues. He would have 50+ homers if he played in a different ball park probably a few less doubles though. Cabrera isn't your standard power hitter where it's all or nothing the guy has 205 hits he's not an Adam Dunn.

The people kept saying if the Tigers don't make the playoffs you don't give it to Cabbie but really even if they didn't when you win the Triple Crown your a shoe in for MVP especially over a rookie whose had a great year but oh yeah where is Trout's team right now?

If Trout continues and proves himself next year or in a year down the road he probably gets a strong consideration (more then he should this year) for MVP but not this season. Stolen bases and fielding aren't going to get you the nod over a guy who did something nobody has done in 45 years where the previous winners lets face it your average pitcher isn't half of what they are today.

I'd like to be at whatever bar Miggy is at the night after winning the MVP.

I get (and agree with) the sabermetrics case for Trout, he also might be the best pure, non-pitcher "baseball player" in the game right now...as a rookie! But Cabrera did nail down the triple crown, and is in the playoffs...he gets MVP. Trout gets ROY obviously.

It's kinda like Kemp/Braun in the NL last year.

I'm not saying his stats wouldn't have been MVP caliber. These reporters were all the same guys who were flip flopping over trout and cabrera for the past 2 weeks and all saying well if he wins the triple crown he gets our vote. Had he hit like 40 hrs and didn't win the triple crown Trout may have won this race.

Can't believe this is even being debated.
