Take a nice, relaxing mid-December cruise from cold New York to.... New England and Canada

    https://www.cnn.com/travel/cruise-sh...ada/index.html

    Total fail.

MSC Cruises USA, one of the mid-size cruise lines, decided they were too greedy to cancel a Caribbean cruise departing from NYC. The weather along the route was going to be too rough and unsafe to sail. Instead, at 8:30 the night before boarding, MSC informed passengers that the itinerary would change to a "New England and Canada" cruise -- which otherwise only goes during the late spring, summer, and early fall. Many had already traveled to New York and did not have access to their warm clothes at home, and the stores were closed to buy new ones.

It visits places such as Boston, Portland (Maine), New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and even a stop to see DJ Chaps in Halifax.

These are nice stops during the summer, but they're cold in mid-December, with not much to do.

Passengers were allowed to cancel and get a "future cruise credit" for the amount they paid, or take the new itinerary. There were no refunds allowed.

Those who took the new itinerary were miserable, especially since most leaving from NYC were living in cold weather areas, and had booked the cruise specifically to get away from that for a week.

Some people chose to take the cruise because they had already paid for flights.

I've always felt that the ports are very important when selecting a cruise. Even on the nicest ships, you eventually get tired of being there and want to get off and do things. If the places you visit suck, the cruise sucks overall. I actually cancelled my last scheduled cruise -- 2018 -- because a hurricane wiped out our itinerary, and the new islands we were visiting either sucked or were places I had been many times. The last cruise I took was 6 years ago.

So what should they have done? After all, MSC can't control the weather.

They should have cancelled the cruise and kicked back refunds to everyone, and then also given them some kind of future cruise credit for their trouble (and for the fact that people spent $ on the flights there).

They should not have tried to reroute to a terrible, cold itinerary and hide being their ToS allowing the line to change the itinerary. The spirit of that is to allow minor diversions to similar destinations -- not to change the entire area and climate of the cruise.

I assume you took these pics, garrett?

I recognize the Peggy's Cove one for sure. That's a nice little day trip from Halifax. Was extremely windy when I went in 2019 (the same trip I met Chaps), but not a big deal because it wasn't cold. I had been there a few times before, including in the 80s.

The drive over there is very scenic and I would stop a few times on the way there to see anything that looks interesting. Parking sucks because it's full of buses, and the lot isn't very well organized.

One thing I did for the first time in Halifax in 2019 was go to one of those places where there's an extreme tidal difference. The place I visited had boats literally on the ground, yet like 6 hours later they would be in 15 feet of water.

I took a Boston version of the New England / Canada cruise in 2015, on NCL via my Seven Stars benefit. This one went to some off-the-beaten-path destinations in Quebec, such as Saguenay and Gaspe. Ended in Quebec City. Was nice because it would otherwise be a pain in the ass to get to these locations, which are on the north side of the river. That particular cruise was almost 100% old people. Ben wasn't in kindergarten yet, but most kids were in school, so families didn't go on this one, plus it just isn't that family-friendly of an itinerary. Anyway, they had some kind of basketball tournament, and I signed up, with dreams of completely owning heads. Not only am I tall, but I was only 43 at the time, and more than 2 decades younger than just about every other passenger on the ship. Unfortunately it didn't run due to lack of interest, which wasn't exactly shocking. Too bad because I couldn't wait to feel like Lebron. I attended an '80s music trivia event and the olds all wanted me on their team, because '80s was too recent for them to know well. I can laugh at this, but sadly I'm getting closer to that age myself now.

The Cruise line industry took payday loans during covid to “stay afloat” (see what I did there).

As such they don't want to cancel anything. They will give you 2x your money on a future travel but cash is king.

This is in a lot of ways a total violation of “the spirit of the rule”. They do have it in the terms that they can change ports, but its supposed to be if you going to the Bahamas and it was blown over by a Cat 5 last Thursday that they can take you down to St Thomas instead.

Last cruise I went on we were supposed to go to a beach island they personally own. Sea was so choppy and weather so crummy they made it a sea day. I was disappointed but not upset. If they tried to take us up to New Jersey I would have been mad.

Those cruise-owned islands suck. I went to one and it was crowded and shitty, plus took 90 min to get back on board at the end.

    You didn’t miss anything.

When I’m stalking Martha Stewart’s place I find it so disconcerting to see the cruise ships anchored in Bar Harbor.

Bar Harbor (Ellsworth, Seal Harbor) is a bit less magical and remote now than when you were a kid. You were pretty lucky to have experienced that.

    Ive been to several.

The royal island is great for teens (big adventure park) and young adults (center pool with music and booze flowing)

The princess island is sprawled out and quiet.

Like the rest of cruising you need to have what you want to accomplish out or you can have a shit experiance.

Even if you rent a noodle for $5 you get priority tendering to. Fro if you leave 1.5 hours before its time to go you will have the boat to yourself. If you wait until the last second its a shit show. Needless to say if you have been several times you don't feel the need to wait it out to get every second in.

The industry wants to monetize everything they can. If you want to get there early and fight for lounge chairs you can. But just like the up charge dinners if you get your own bed or gazebo its reserved for you and it comes with plus service.

Kind of helps if you ate a beach person. If 364 days a year you hate the beach you probably wont love it.

Lot of truth to this if you speaking to Carib/Mexican Cruises out of the southern US. And the class of passenger isnt getting better over time. Same for Vegas or any other vacation spot.

Thats 85% of it so I wont fight you on the point.

That said go on a river cruise in Europe and talk about class. No white trash there at all.

Have been hammering this message at home to my wife who has never gone on one and wants to.

I hate being trapped in a ship with fat olds crushing food and drink but know it appeals to some.

You really do get what you pay for in Cruising especially with who you are surrounded by people wise, Carnival because its the "Fun Ship" is very cheap for most and has more rough people on it, fights could happen Carnival etc

Cunard is another Class up and expensive but you're not pinching pennies pay for the luxury and facilities its worth it, then the itinerary/destinations

You're wife will love it if you don't undersell the experience as all low class people its not, its mostly happy well meaning people

Cruised out of NYC once. Never again. It was the most chaotic event I ever was a part of. Literally on and off the cruise you are walking your luggage in the middle of the city on sidewalks trying to find where to go. Leaving I was in flip flops trying to find a cab to LaGuardia and it was pouring rain and stepped into a warm puddle of God knows what. Give it to Miami they know how to get you on and off a boat easily.

all the cruise lines are different and the better ones have a private class within the ship which is sequestered off --- see msc yacht club or celebrity retreat --- private lounges, dinning rooms, pool decks, etc.

re private islands, it is dependent upon which one you are talking about. our favorite by far is MSC's Ocean Cay. It is fantastic if you simply enjoy crystal clear blue water without the amusement park bs.

to each their own. most of the complaining in here comes from folks who either haven't been on cruises or have only cruised carnival and are overgeneralizing.

Never take a cruise that poor people can afford.
