This tweet was really needed. The strokefest from everyone congratulating WPT for simply paying their guarantee was way overboard. From a business perspective a 2.5 million dollar overlay is a disaster.
I get it’s a great tournament and as close to the main event as someone can get to a real life changing score. Of course the WSOP is happy they didn’t get to the 40 Million.
We will never no exactly how much the WSOP in Paradise contributed to them coming up short. I think they mainly underestimated the effect that 100s of giveaways last year had on both the turnout and reception of the event. 10K is a big buy-in and why tournaments that were once priced at 10K years ago moved to 3.5 or so.
Out of all those people who went for free last year only a small fraction probably translated to paying customers this year. It’s still a huge turnout and massive tournament. But I don’t think they expected to come up short. All that money WSOP injected down in the Bahamas probably had a small effect. I think a majority of those able to travel down there probably ended up playing in both.
But yes the cock stroking of the WPT for paying the guarantee and what a great job they did is way overboard. Business wise this is a huge L. 2.5 million a lot of coin.
Most surprising of the people attacking Norman Chad was MGM's director of poker, Sean McCormack.
McCormack moved up quickly in the MGM ranks, going from assistant Bellagio poker director to Aria poker director to director of all MGM poker.
He usually stays out of public drama. For example, he has been attacked for years by Jami Lafay for (justifiably) banning her from Aria when he was director there. She's written terrible things about him on Twitter over time, but he's never once responded to her.
But Sean decided to finally speak out today -- against Norm!

WPT has worked with MGM in the past (most notably, the Bellagio Five Diamond), so maybe that's part of the reason for this. But I don't think WPT and MGM have any present association, right?
Norm has since backed down, calling it a "misfired joke".
I don't believe that. I really do think he is sick of the hype of the WPT Wynn, and wanted to mock it.
At the same time, I don't necessarily believe he was doing this on behalf of WSOP. He has, at times, spoken out against the WSOP. Most notably, he's bashed WSOP for their increased number of rebuy events, claiming it's bad for poker (which I agree).
I always enjoyed Norman Chads humor
Matt Savage claims not to be offended:

Doug Polk taking a poll regarding whether Norm meant it as an insult... the majority says insult, not joke:

I agree it was an insult.
Meanwhile Sean is just getting roasted online like a serrano pepper in a big rotisserie
