*** OFFICIAL *** Can the Dodgers perform a miracle and catch the Cardinals in 3 games thread

    The situation

Cardinals lead Dodgers by 2 games for the 2nd wildcard spot.

Both teams have 3 games left, and both are against good opponents.

St. Louis is at home versus first-place Cincinnati. They are tied 1-1 after St. Louis pitcher Jaime Garcia hit a home run off Bronson Arroyo.

Dodgers at home, and play 3 against the Giants.

The first of those starts in a little bit.

Dodgers have won 5 in a row, but if the Cards win 2 out of 3, the Dodgers don't make the postseason no matter what.

If the Cards win 1 out of 3, the Dodgers have to sweep the Giants, which is tough.

If the Cards win 0 out of 3, the Dodgers still need to win 2 of 3 from the Giants.

Not likely that the Dodgers will manage this, but it also wasn't likely that 10.5-back St. Louis in late August 2011 was going to win the World Series.

I know Willie will be rooting for the Cards, but he deserves for them to lose because he stole.

Sucks that Matt Kemp got his swing back with just a week left in the season.

I think he was hurt for awhile and finally healed. Probably too little, too late.

At least Beckett has pitched fairly well, and I'm looking forward to seeing Crawford in the outfield next year.

In related news, Chicago Cubs tickets for their last game at Wrigley this year are going for under $1 on Stubhub.

Good walk off win by the Dodgers, of course Cardinals are taking care of business, first against Washington, and now Cincinnati, so have to hand it to them.

Luis Cruz again with a big clutch hit in the bottom of the 9th. Is this guy too good to be true or what? A career minor leaguer and Mexican league player, who at age 28 has transformed into a .300 hitting, super clutch, solid fielding 3rd baseman.

is this guy the real deal and the answer at 3rd base? Or in a year as soon as he signs a big contract is he gonna get busted for PED's and then revert back to his previous self?

    No problem.

They won 3-2 with a 9th inning walkoff.

Brilliant move by Bochy to pitch to Luis Cruz with a man on 2nd, 1 out, and first base open.

Unfortunately, the Dodgers will need the Cardinals to lose both of the next games to even have a chance.

Here is something to make you feel better.

Let's assume for argument's sake that the Dodgers and Cardinals each have a 50/50 chance to win each of their next two games.

That would still only give a 1-in-16 chance to the Dodgers to win both while the Cards lose both.

Even worse, the Cards are at home and have more to play for than the Reds, so I think their chance of winning is higher than 50-50.

I could actually see the Dodgers sweeping the Giants here (they are playing with the same energy and excitement as they did early in the season), but watching helplessly as the Cards win one of the two remaining games.

I hated the 2nd wildcard idea but at least it left me excited to watch the Dodgers' final games of the season, where normally I would not even bother turning it on at this point.

By the way, the Reds are overrated and aren't going to do anything this year.

I actually like the Cards' chances again, and as much as I hate to admit it, the Giants look pretty good, too.

Dodgers are actually playing well enough right now to compete in the postseason, but they let their bats sleep throughout most of September, so they probably won't get the chance.

what's scary about the reds is aroldis chapman and the rest of their bullpen to a lesser extent

you have to get to them early

although aroldis could collapse under the pressure, you never know

Dodgers had the chance to do it again.

They had 10 hits and only managed 3 runs, losing 4-3 after the Cardinals lost 3-1.

They had speedy Dee Gordon on 2nd base with 2 out in the 9th, but Mark Ellis lined out to center. A little bit softer hit and the ball would have fallen to tie the game.

I really liked this team. Wanted to see them in the playoffs, but they really fucked themselves big time in the first few weeks of September.

They won 6 in a row to keep themselves alive through the 161st game, but it had to end at some point.
