Cool Native hawaians are moving to Las Vegas.

Me- Very smart move. I see very little value or life in Hawaii, its just not for me.

    https://www.cbsnews.com/news/hawaii-...ost-of-living/

On the mainland, Hawaiians are settling in what's been nicknamed the "Ninth Island of Hawaii:" Las Vegas, Nevada. It may seem a surprising choice, but Hawaiians were pioneers of the city's entertainment scene in the 50s and 60s, and over the decades, visitors became residents. As the cost of home ownership in Hawaii skyrocketed, the trickle of people moving to Vegas became a near exodus. Hall is among those who have made the "huge sacrifice" to make Las Vegas their adopted home.

"We can enjoy to live here. We can breathe," Hall said. "We can afford the mortgage payments. To actually work to live instead of living to work is amazing."

    Dumbest thing I've heard from
    Desertrunnner.
Have you ever been to Hawaii? Doesn't really matter

It's not the Untied States The native population are actively attempting to undo the failed run over

America, god bless ruins everything which includes the gift to the world which is Hawaii
    Desert runner will not respond

Pay for a new Palestinian or Jewish homeland and there will no takers

Yes, I’ve been to Hawaii several times before. It’s nice, but over rated, just not for me.

Yes, Vegas has long had a big Hawaiian population. I heard the "ninth island" term back when I lived here in the 2000s/

For whatever reason, a lot of the Hawaiian males in Vegas are gay -- far more than in the average population, and also more than in Hawaii. I'm not sure why this occurred, but it might be because Vegas was a fairly gay-friendly city, long before being gay was widely accepted.

Didn’t not know about their “gayness”. Druff is the expert on homosexuality around here, but I do know that Native Hawaiians are the most racist people in America, by far.

You can thank Sam Boyd for the influx of Hawaiian's to Las Vegas. He started flying them in on junkets to the California Club in downtown Las Vegas decades ago. The overflow went to the Fremont after Boyd acquired it and also Main Street Station after they acquired that property.

I haven't been in CC since about 2007 but the place was always filled with Hawaiian's. Boyd used travel agents in Hawaii to bring them in.

There were plaques around the casino telling Boyd's story and how he fell in love with Hawaiian culture. LOL! What he really fell in love with was Hawaiian sucker gamblers.

Las Vegas has been the number one travel destination of Hawaiian's for decades. All started by Sam Boyd.

It was a Hawaiian at the California Club, Stanley Fujitake, that set the record in 1989 for the longest craps roll, making 117 passes and holding the dice for over 3 hours. The record was finally broken in 2010.

that was quite a trivia pull by mickeycrimm. Hawaiian dice roll. knew the story but I sure didn’t know the guy was from Oahu.

The man who owns the record rolls for 3 damn hours and only won $30k? You take some off and book a profit but after a certain point you’re pressing everything.

    Comment mickey?

Druff, I love the radio show, and I sometimes find this forum entertaining, so I usually ignore it when you start talking about things you know nothing about... but when you post stupid shit like this...

"A lot of the Hawaiian males in Vegas are gay -- far more than in the average population, and also more than in Hawaii." I have to respond.

How would you possibly know this? Of course... You don't. How many native Hawaiians in Hawaii are gay? How did you find out?

I lived in Hawaii and other parts of the South Pacific for 25 years, so I know a little bit about the cultures. Here are a few things most of you will not care about, but a few might find interesting:
People from a particular culture can act very differently when they are living somewhere else. Hawaiians are different in California than they are on Kauai. Samoans who are peaceful and community oriented at home have a reputation for being bloodthirsty thugs in Hawaii, USA. and the NFL.
Same to some degree with Tongans.
Males in some polynesian cultures have more effeminate characteristics than we normally see in White American males. This does not mea they are "gay" or homosexual.

A couple of posts down from yours, a couple of our civics experts proclaim that "Native Hawiians are the most racist people." No... that would be you.
I'm actually surprised at who made this statement. A couple of people who I thought were better than that. There are a number of posters here who you can just laugh at 'cuz you know they're stupid, but you guys don't fall under that which makes it even more disturbing.

I 100% stand by my statement. A majority of Native Hawaiians are racist. To them, everybody is haule, no matter how long your family has lived there. Just ask any Japanese American on the islands.

It's a beautiful place. I love snorkeling and every beach was amazing with turtles and huma trigger fish- tangs. Gorgeous.

Everything was very expensive- twice as much or more than similar resorts in Mexico. The people seemed happier though. I wonder if you talk to resort workers in Mexico or Jamaica what they would say about their visitors. Probably much the same as the native Hawaiians say about visitors from the mainland. Not sure if that is racist, or just resentful.

I was blown away, though, by a tour guide, or somesuch, who said the pigs brought over by the Polynesians were less damaging than the pigs brought over by Captain Cook. Dude was racist for pigs.

First... it's "haole" not "haule". Minor point, but you want to be accurate with your racial slurs.
I don't know if you're speaking from personal experience or just repeating what you've been told. How many "Japanese Americans on the islands" have you actually asked about racism? I'd put the over/under at 2, and I'll take the under. And how do you know how "A majority of Native Hawaiians" think about anything?
In any case, I'm sorry for you that this is your experience. I'm also sorry that you "100%" stand by your statement without even giving it any more thought. This is exactly how racism gets firmly entrenched in a society.

I enjoyed the snorkeling there, especially on the big island on Hapuna Beach. I was surrounded by giant sea turtles and lots of fish.

One thing I'll say is that on the same trip, in the northeast part of the big island, we stopped in a small town at a pizza restaurant. It was EXTREMELY slow service. At first we just attributed it to "island time" (the phenomenon of all service being slow on tropical islands), but we saw locals come in and get served a good deal of time before we did, even though we ordered much earlier. This was NOT a tourist town, but rather just a locals town where tourists rarely passed through, let alone stopped by. It became very clear that the "haoles" were considered last priority!

It's very sad that even on this site, things have become so PC that you can't mention a big gay population without people taking it as some sort of slight against gay people. I didn't think I'd have to explain how I know this, but since I'm getting shit about the statement, here goes....

I had a Hawaiian boyfriend briefly when I lived in Vegas in the 2000s.

No, that's not it. No Hawaiian boyfriend. Sorry to disappoint you.

But at my first apartment complex in Vegas, I got to know a Hawaiian guy who lived a few doors down. He was very overweight, but a very nice dude. We were never close friends, but we would talk when we saw each other around, and in one of the conversations he mentioned to me that he was gay. He didn't do it in the context of trying to hit on me or anything like that, but rather just mentioned a boyfriend he had in the past. He also told me about the "ninth island" term (referring to the large Hawaiian population in Vegas), and he was the one to remark that he was surprised how many other Hawaiian males in Vegas were gay. I asked if maybe the gay community in Hawaii had discussed Vegas as a good place to move, and he said that he never heard such a thing, aside from it being known on the islands that many people there had family in Vegas. He couldn't figure out why a lot of the men who came from Hawaii to Vegas were gay.

Just in case you think it's this guy's false perception, I had a second data point. A few years later I was on a terrible dating site and ended up talking to a Hawaiian girl in Vegas. I brought up the guy who used to live down the hall (I had moved by then), and mentioned what he said both about the "ninth island" and the prevalence of gay males in the Vegas Hawaiian community. All of a sudden her voice got very animated and she told me she had noticed the exact same thing, and in fact it was one of the reasons that dating within the Vegas Hawaiian community was tough for her. I asked her if she had any idea why this was the case, and she also had no idea.

This all occurred during the 2000s, and I'll admit that I haven't kept track of the demographics of the Vegas Hawaiian population. But if you ask a Hawaiian-born Vegas resident who was in Vegas in the 2000s, I bet they'll confirm what I said.

Let’s see, I been going to the Mauna Kea Beach Hotel every Thanksgiving for the last 40 years, I dated a third generation Hawaiian who is Japanese, and I got friends that have lived on the Big Island for 30 years. I stand by my statement. Sorry for the typo.
