Terry Funk the OG Hardcore Wrestler DD at 79

The OG old man who wrestled for 50 years passed away today at age 79. Funk Started wrestling in 1965 in the small wrestling organization Western States Sports when he got his real boost with his brother Dory Funk Jr. He moved to NWA territory organization Championship Wrestling of Florida where he beat Jack Brisco for the NWA World Heavyweight Championship in 1975 replacing his brother Dory Jr when the later failed to show up for the match holding it for 14 months defending against a bunch of HOFers like Dusty Rhodes, Brisco, and Giant Baba. He finally lost to Harley Race in Toronto (Race himself a HOFer).

He wrestled his last official match just 6 yrs ago in Sept 2017 at the age of 72 against the aging RockNRoll Express against Jerry Lawler, his late son Brian Christopher, and Doug Gilbert.

Notable he appeared in the movie Road House with Patrick Swayze as a fellow bouncer as well as in the Pro Wrestling Documentary Beyond the Mat which gave a glimpse into the dark side of the industry.

In all he won 32 different titles and roughly 60 title runs in various organizations from NWA, WCW, WWE, NJPW, USWA, JCW (Yes the Juggalo Pro Wrestling Organization), among others

RIP Terry 10 Bell Salute to you sir.

Chainsaw Charlie gave him more publicity than he got over the years sadly.

One of the all time greats.

    RIP

He really was before the steroid era, which is probably why he made it to near 80. These guys in the 70s and 80s partied extremely hard though. It was the territories and it was nothing for these guys to have a Saturday match at noon in Georgia, then get a case of beer and a bottle of whiskey and drive four in a car to Tennessee and show up to the 7pm show hammered. Then wake up Sunday and do the same thing. Jerry from this site would have made a great manager, like Jim Cornette.
