My buddy uses his Traeger all the time. His only complaint is the wood pellets are pricey.

Research says a 10 pound brisket max, not bad. Smoke that thing for a few hours and finish in the oven, should be legit

Is your buddy buying the Traeger name brand pellets, or others?

I do not own a pellet grill (yet), but I know several people who have one. A couple of them have Traegers, and the rest have other brands. However, none of them use Traeger brand pellets, mainly because they cost more - and im sure the added cost is only because of the brand name. They use other brands that they claim works just as well, for less cost.

On another note...

I normally use an offset stick burner for smoking. I like it, and it normally works well for me. I guess my stance has always been to keep things (specifically the smoking process) as "natural" as possible.

There has always been one drawback though. If I want to do some real long term smokes, like a brisket for example, it is sometimes more difficult to maintain everything in the long smoking time period... especially since it takes about 12 hours or more. If im on the go or sleeping, I certainly cant put in a brisket and be able to watch it and add wood etc all the time.

For years, I have shunned pellet smokers as nothing but a lazy/unnatural way of doing things, but frankly, lately im actually considering buying one. I wouldn't use it for everything, but id like to have it for specific situations where i can do the long term smokes and not have to rely on being right there monitoring the fire etc a majority of the time.
