Better not look at twitter posts too often.... Elon continuing to monetize twitter

Elon totally making twitter paid service.

Earlier this week they blocked anyone who wasn't logged into an account from looking at twitter. Now free users will have very limited access. Free accounts limited to reading 600 posts a day....

FTR within 20 mins of looking at twitter you will pretty much see 600 posts (I'm locked out myself). Not click 600 posts but scroll through 600 including all those shitty people you follow. This will destroy ad revenue and result in people unfollowing tons of accounts. Elon is a fucking moron.

I mean this makes no sense. Zero chance I pay for Twitter so I’m way more inclined to just stop using it. Have to think this gets reversed asap.

    Incredibly dumb decision.

I don't think it's about bots scraping Twitter. First, there are better ways to address content-scraping bots than limiting everyone to reading relatively few tweets.
Second, Twitter does not have a significant issue with their content being reproduced elsewhere. When was the last time you went to a third-party "Twitter archive" service to read tweets?

I agree with betcheckbet that this is about monetization.

However, this also doesn't make complete sense, because verified accounts have only 6000-8000 tweets they can read per day, rather than before where it was unlimited. So if this was just about getting people to pay, why not allow subscribers to read unlimited amounts (unless this limit is still there in order to make it look like it's about stopping bots)?

Believe it or not, this might be about advertisers.

This might be a way to attract advertisers back to the platform, insisting they will get "quality over quantity", as they can be assured that the same people won't see the same ads over and over.

Very weird. Has the potential to kill the platform if it stays this way.

That's a stupid notion, to be honest.

Either a dumb play to get more people to sign up (but still have limits & see ads lol) or is covering up fail on another front.

Don’t trust Musk. Have an account through protonmail so still can be incognito but surmise that won’t be long. All of these sites are a means to identify you for nefarious purposes.

Limiting views on tweets on a website that he's trying to sell advertising on... and some people think this guy is a genius.

One of the biggest changes people aren't talking much about involves the locking down of Twitter from unregistered accounts.

You used to be able to see tweets if you didn't have a Twitter account. No more. Except in the case of embedded tweets (which is why you can still see them posted here), if you try to read twitter.com without being logged in, you won't be able to see anything.

    Brutal.

Not only does this chase eyeballs off the platform, but it has a number of other immediate effects. Among other things...

    1) If you share a tweet with someone via iPhone text message, it no longer shows up embedded in the text conversation. Now it has just a twitter.com link, and the recipient has to click it, AND log in. Awful.

    2) You know those annoying long tweets people with blue checkmarks can write? It was bad enough having to click on them from the Twitter app and having an entire new page load in a browser to read the rest of it. Now if you're logged in via the app but not through a browser, your phone will force you to log in to read the rest of the tweet. Again, awful. In fact, the entire implementation of the long tweets has been terrible. Why not just a "see more" button which then displays the rest of it, rather than loading a brand new page?

    3) This discourages sharing of Twitter links in general. One of the great things about Twitter was that you could share tweets with people who otherwise have no interest in being part of Twitter, but find certain tweets interesting. For example, I will sometimes send things to my parents from Twitter, even though they have no desire to maintain a Twitter account or make any tweets. Now I can't do that anymore.
