Pretty awesome Foxwoods story from 2005. Never heard about that before. Funny how it was also an O8 event.

This almost happened at the 2022 $1500 WSOP Limit Holdem event. Eric Shimp came into Day 2 with decent chips, but busted without cashing. Later that evening, he passed away from heart failure.

Had he lasted a bit longer in the event, this tragedy likely would have occurred at the table.

I actually knew Eric Shimp a bit. Was always nice when we interacted. He was one of the original founders of RealGrinders along with Ray Davis.

In case you're wondering why more players don't drop dead during poker tournament, it's because most elderly people do not play tournaments due to the long days and rigid scheduling. It's also because poker requires no physical activity, so people 45-70 aren't as likely to have a heart attack while playing. Heart attacks in that age group are more often linked to some kind of physical activity, even if only light activity.
