Poker House Dallas latest card room to get hassled by the city

Last year, Texas Card House in Dallas had their business license revoked, but ended up winning their appeal.

Now it appears the city is going after one of the other rooms in town, Poker House Dallas.

This letter was supposedly sent to Poker House Dallas a few days ago, though it was oddly posted as a "review" on the Poker Atlas app. It's not clear if this letter is real, or why it was posted a as a review (did a customer get a hold of it?), but here it is:




However, there's no question that the city is indeed going after Poker House Dallas. Pokernews published an article reporting that the room might be force-closed on May 23.

This was posted on the Poker House Dallas page by management on the Poker Atlas app:




Poker House Dallas is not accused of any wrongdoing against players. The closure threat is due to the very murky legal status of live poker in Texas. These rooms do not operate as casinos or card rooms, but instead private clubs which cannot charge rake, but can charge "seat fees" or admission fees in order to support themselves. These rooms are unregulated, and operate in a similar fashion to a home game.

In case you're wondering, none of this will affect Doug Polk's "The Lodge", as that is located in Round Rock, and these actions are taken by the city of Dallas, not the state of Texas. However, The Lodge could possibly lose its ability to operate in the future if the state decides to take action.

According to Haley Hintze's article about, Poker House Dallas is a little different than the other rooms under government attack in the Dallas area.

This is because Poker House Dallas apparently converted a 2009 "cabaret" business into a poker room, without specifically getting permission from the city of Dallas to do so.

The city is asserting that Poker House Dallas is running an illegal gambling operation because they did not file a revised description of use for the venue, and it is still officially listed as a cabaret/nightclub. Therefore, they did not get a proper certificate of occupancy (the equivalent of a business license) for running a poker club, thus making the existing certificate of occupancy invalid. Or so says the city of Dallas.

The owners of Poker House Dallas did notify the city in 2021 that they were going to allow people to play poker games on premises for a fee, but apparently that's not enough.

This apparently was enough for Dallas to legally shut them down, and survive the existing court challenges.

The other two clubs being hassled by Dallas, Shuffle 214 and Texas Card House Dallas, did have certificates of occupancy for running a poker club, but the city asserted they were "issued in error" (which is likely bullshit). These attempts to shut them down ultimately failed, as it was determined that the city had plenty of time to due its due diligence regarding the nature of these two clubs, and couldn't claim it was misled or unaware of what would be happening at them.

Anyway, Poker House Dallas will indeed be shutting down. It does appear they have the funds to cover outstanding chips not cashed yet, but anyone with such chips should get down there immediately and cash them.

Strangely enough the city is suing its own board of adjustments over the ordeal. I've spent the last 2 weeks in the area researching poker friendly counties and cities. I also purchased the contents of a recently closed room. Hoping to be open in Collin County in the next 60 Days in a Dallas suburb.
