"Birds born in a cage think flying is an illness." - Alejandro Jodorowsky

"America is not so much a nightmare as a non-dream. The American non-dream is precisely a move to wipe the dream out of existence. The dream is a spontaneous happening and therefore dangerous to a control system set up by the non-dreamers." -- William S. Burroughs

I think you're a bit too young to remember the origins of this song and video.

It was made specifically for a 1985 episode of Miami Vice, also called "Smuggler's Blues". Frey played a pilot in the episode, who was featured fairly prominently. The song itself also appeared in the episode, as pop music was a big part of Miami Vice at the time, and the show had become successful enough to where eventual hit songs were being custom written for it. (Another one was "You Belong to the City", also by Frey, which appeared in a different episode.)

The video above is in Miami Vice form, with actual scenes from the show spliced in. Frey also has a different role in the video than he did in the episode.

Frey had such an association with Miami Vice that Pepsi even made a commercial featuring him and Don Johnson driving through Miami, breaking down, and then stumbling onto a party of young people who are astounded to see them. The commercial was unusual -- produced as a 2 minute, 15 second short, and then edited down for play on TV in 30-60 second form. Here's the full version:

Since we are on the Glenn Frey subject, I might as well post the You Belong to the City video.

This video is a great time capsule of gritty, 1980s New York City. It also tells a story, where a pretty girl first gets stood up after making dinner at home for an unseen man, decides to go to a bar, and first spies Frey when her cab almost hits him while he crosses the street. Then they happen to end up at the same bar together (Frey had been walking there through a very active-looking NYC on a summer night), and hook up after she tires of obnoxious men hitting on her.

They go back to her apartment, presumably bang, and Frey leaves at 6am, doing the walk of not-much-shame back home. I do like how it was made clear at the end that Frey was just having a one-night-stand, and this wasn't a love story!

Looks like much of the video consisted of actual scenes of Frey walking through summertime NYC street nightlife, as well as "B roll" footage of various city scenes, which is very cool to see nearly 40 years later. I would love to go back to that time and walk through the city on a night like that, even with the risk of the crime problem, which was quite bad in the mid-80s, improved a lot starting with Giuliani's reign in 1994, and now is getting bad once again.

I was born in the greater NYC area but was moved to California as a 1-year-old. I always wondered how my life would have differed if I stayed there.
