Interesting tipping question from /r/poker on Reddit

Bellagio dealer says to me, "tips appreciated", as she pushes a pot my way

I'm not tipping each and every hand, especially on "quick" hands where I raise pre-flop and everyone folds to me. It happened maybe two or three times after this dealer sat down.

When she sat down, she was being quite direct and rude to my friend about how they were too close to the table when watching from behind, so I didn't appreciate her attitude already.

After hearing that comment I DEFINITELY was not going to tip. Pretended to not hear her and just got up and left.

First time EVER I've been asked for a tip. I'm never going to tip anyone that asks for a tip (in any industry or situation).

By the way if you're the type of person who tips $1/$2 each and every hand, no matter what, good for you. Just sharing my view.

Someone reposted the above on Twitter. My response was:

Anyone who demands tips out loud gets zero point zero from me. This is across all industries, not just gambling. And if I get a nasty reaction from a standard tip, I also don't tip that person again.

    Respect goes two ways.

To be fair, I've never had a poker dealer do anything like this to me. I've had it occur twice at blackjack, though, where the dealer immediately made tipping comments before I even had a chance to tip them. In both cases, I tipped them zero point zero.

I have stopped tipping poker dealers when they angrily snatch my $1 tip without saying a word, and I can tell they're resenting me.

My rule of thumb with tipping is that I will never tip anyone who is either entitled or resentful. The entire concept of tipping is voluntary, meaning that service workers should not demand/suggest tips, nor should they act resentful because they didn't get as much as they hoped (unless it was a really egregious stiffing, and even then they should keep quiet.)

Someone on Twitter also brought up a great point. They said that some people overtip, while some don't tip at all, and others tip the expected amount, so it all averages out. Therefore, you shouldn't be rude to anyone.

    Tipping has gotten ridiculous.

I went to pick up a pizza recently; learned they are now cashless and auto-add 20% to all orders. I had to wait a little bit longer than expected and the trans faggot was rude to me.

Thought of Druff and disputed the add, noting that junkie trans was rude and he/she/it would have gotten nothing.

Was informed of a posted update both in store and online about the change and them wanting to give pizza makers health insurance, but had it waived 1x because
'Valerie' with an Adam's apple the size of a Jewdonk goiter was nasty.

Quick and easy when you know how to treat people.

I wonder if it was that female Israeli dealer at the Bellagio that treated Johnny Vibes poorly because he looked Middle Eastern.

This is a trick restaurants use these days to fuck their landlord.

Many have a cheap rent but an agreement to share X% of gross receipts.

The tips are not included in the calculation, so the owner just designates part of it "a tip to support healthcare of employees" and the landlord doesn't get that portion.

Resort fees were conceived for a similar reason in the 2000s, to fuck travel agents.

I hit quads or something at Harrah's New Orleans for less than $500, maybe a couple hundred, and the dealer gave me a hard time for a buck on the hand.

Same thing in Philly one time- dude says "Very generous, sir." after I ship a buck in some normal pot in fucking oily voice. Fuck off.

I tip great. 50% for dinner often, but ask in advance and screw off.

I literally lived at Foxwoods (worlds biggest poker room at the time) for 6 months playing poker in 2007 and never once did I hear a poker dealer solicit or comment on a tip.

These stories illustrate the general decline in civility today.

As a player, your response absolutely demands similar uncivil behavior so it sounds like a good time to be had by all. Hard pass.

I tip well at restaurants, especially ones I frequent. As for poker dealers, I tip the standard dollar, maybe two. I wouldn’t give two fucks if a dealer thought I was cheap. Here’s why. No dealer has ever has given me a rebate when they put a bad beat on me!

In my experience, the guy at the local card room you want to get chummy with is the assistant manager, who is the boss of the floor men. They are there all the time. If the staff knows you’re friends, nobody will fuck with you. Take them out golfing or a to sporting event and you’re in.

BTW, I had a couple free months last fall and went to a 5 weeks poker dealer school in Vegas. I passed, but it was harder than I thought! Don’t know if I’ll actually ever deal, maybe some local tournaments, but it’s another job skill if I need one here in Tahoe.

Not being a dick, but aren’t you a lawyer?

As for Tahoe, I’m always impressed the local McDonalds in SLT is starting at $16 an hour. Every time I’m there at my home, I think of taking a PT job there. Probably pays more than a poker dealer, lol.

Agree that it’s never bad to get on the good side of any asst room manager/equivalent day-to-day operations boss in other industries.

I don’t tip for preflop wins, unless big pot. Otherwise, I’ll tip between $1-$5, with an average tip of $2. That’s a bit higher than avg ime. I’m used to tipping well, in general. This is often because most restaurants I frequent either don’t charge me or they take good care of me some other way. One of my friends tips 1k for 5-6 person dinner at a nice place. Another friend paid for his masseuse to visit her family in China. In both cases, they’re tipping a specific female who they have zero romantic interest in, so I’m not sure why they do it.

I’ve never won any type of jackpot, but at ‘18 LAPC, an hour after getting off the plane, I’m in a 3 handed 1/2 mix w ODB Baker (Todd’s boy hehe) and some Patel when my wife starts texting me frantically. She thinks she’s hit the bbjp on the other side, playing 4/8 lhe. I go over there and sure enough the VERY FIRST hand she played - posting UTG+2 - she’s dealt JJ. Flop comes JJA and you know the rest. As the loser of the hand she received the biggest portion for 20,5 or so out of like 60+k. And she tried to muck the hand. Fortunately, the older Asian lady who my wife showed the hand to, before mucking, turned into Bruce Lee in his prime and grabbed my wife’s arm before she could muck. I told her to give the dealer a $500 purple chip. I’m pretty sure she has the best 4/8 WR in the world lol

Yes, I’m a lawyer, and if I really needed money, I’d go back to it. Been there done that.
